I just want to share my experiences!

I have an otherwise healthy and vigorous rooster but he came to me with an injury to his eye. I contacted a breeder in my area I had used before to get a replacement Amerucana rooster for one I lost to a hawk. I was intending to buy a healthy rooster but when I got there they wanted to move this older guy on because the younger roosters had injured him sometime ago. His eye looked scared and injured but not presently infected. They had treated his injuries with antibiotic cream and he had recovered.

he seemed fine for about 6 weeks then I noticed a bit of puffiness and then two days later increased cloudiness.

took him to the vet immediately. The vet checked him for respiratory illness signs. She said it was conjunctivitis thankfully . She wanted to do a test to make sure the cornea wasn’t punctured. I asked her if she thought he had been infected for months and she didn’t think it was an old infection. His eye wasn’t punctured just had major scaring and a eyelid that doesn’t work properly. His treatment was gentramycin drops 3-4x a day.

he did seem to be entirely better. Unfortunately he’s not the sort of guy that can be caught easily so I was only able to do 2x a day. I believe this mistake is what lead to his eye seemingly be much better but later on developing a sinus infection! I learned the eye of the chicken and sinus are very much interconnected. I’m going to list my treatment plan.

1) my SO started using vetericyn pink eye spray as a flush. I learned it’s better to align the bottle nozzle to a dropper syringe and fill it with the liquid. It’s much easier to flush the eye this way.
2) since I was away on vacation I ordered terramycin cream and told me SO to try that. ( as recommended in my BYC research).
3) at this point I’ve learned that his symptoms indicate a sinus infection so I send my SO videos to show him how to get the pus build up out of sinus area. I ordered a facial tool that could be sterilized to help with this. He improved but still had puss regeneration.
4) I got back from my trip and was able to use the tools I had and really get it properly clean. I also remembered I had terramycin pills. Broke a 250 mg pull into 6 parts. Stuck one down his throat late night and early morning. Saw much improvement ( Saturday morning)
5) I decided the way to go was doing injections of terramycin day 1 day 3 and possibly day 5 . I have seen this suggestion in my research. I just can’t catch the guy at all during the day so I can’t do the recommended 3-4x daily dosing he would need to properly knock out his infection.
6) Saturday night I gave him the first injection of 40 mg, flushed his eye ( noticing very minimal pus built compared to earlier ) covered eye in ointment and returned him to his ladies.

SUNDAY morning, he’s looking much better eye has not been swollen shut last 48 hrs! I know ideally I would separate him out but he gets so incredibly stressed. That is also why I’m attempting to treat him at home in car and at vet he was obviously have shock issues panting and just scared me how distressed his breathing became. When I treat him he is very docile and doesn’t struggle or pant.

I will add pictures to show how he was progressed.

PHOTOS 1-2 ( infection returns after treatment)
PHOTOS 3, 4, 5, 6 (infection is weeping and I become very concerned)
Photo 7 ( very beginning of treatment)

I haven’t photographed the improvements yet (will do and update) but his eye is no longer swollen shut and bulging and he will now let me stand on his bad side and doesn’t immediately turn to face me with good eye. So I think it’s working and hope to be able to add more updates with good news.

all input welcome!

Update on rooster. Along with other treatment I had to get what was trapped under his 3rd eyelid. Applied hot compress and used tweezers to pull out chunk of hard pus. He’s pretty much recovered now!
