Hello everyone, I have a rooster that is about 10 weeks and was roaming around when all of a sudden he started freaking out going around in circles and then would walk backwards, I noticed one of his eyes is shut and the other one is open, he was fine 30 minutes ago. Does anyone know what this may be? Thanks

This is the eye that is closed, it seems he’s trying to open it but then closes it after a few seconds

One of my hens did that I found out a piece of wire had stabbed her in her eye. Sadly, she is blind in that eye now. I have fixed the wire so it won't happen again but I don't know if your rooster got stabbed or not but it is just something to look for

It seems he may of scratched his eye on something possibly the chicken wire, he’s trying to open it, I’ll be sure to fix the wiring

Is he continuing to walk backwards and in circles? Does he have any signs of a twisted neck? I would get another pair of hands, and look into the closed eye for debris. Do you have other cockerels or roosters who may have pecked him? Watch for any other signs of wry neck. Wry neck can be a symptom, and may include walking backward or in circles, and a twisted or spasmed neck. It can be stuck down, up, or to the side. His symptoms could just be hysteria from getting pecked or hurt, so keep an eye on him for any other symptoms. If they continue, get some Poultry Cell or Poultry NutriDrench vitamin tonic, and give him 2-3 ml daily a drop at a time or in some food.

He has stopped going in circles and walking backwards it seems that it freaked him out, there are no other rooster but I’ll be sure to check his eye

I would separate him from the flock because other chickens can tell when they’re unwell or injured and may peck them.

Hopefully, he just got hurt or pecked. I would not separate him unless the others are picking on him. If you have other young cockerels, they can get rowdy, so separate if that happens. We all raise young chickens and can end up with too many roosters. If that happens, they need to be separated in a bachelor coop away from the girls so they dont hust each other or harass the girls. You can always use a soothing human eye drop such as Systane or similar into the eye if needed. Feed stores sell Vetericyn for eyes, and antibiotic ointment such as Terramycine eye ointment.
