(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had chickens for the past 3 years or so. I'm about to grow my numbers, expanding to Silkies and Seramas.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Sadly only 3, but that is about to change.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 2 Rhode Island Reds and 1 Appenzeller Spitzhauben. The Spitzhauben was a rescue and is really a freeloader at this point, only 5 or 10 eggs in the past year. But we love her. My daughter even had her in a local chicken show.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Might sound weird, but I love talking to them and watching their reactions. I also love the excitement every morning when they see me or my son coming out with some scraps.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I work a lot and am raising a couple kids, so that keeps me pretty busy. I try to golf and fish sometimes.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My family is my son and daughter who love chickens as much as me and my wife who is indifferent about chickens. She does like the eggs though. We also have a couple dogs, a guinea pig, hermit crabs, and more fish tanks than I can count. I manage some commercial solar sites in NC.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have searched online for so many things, whether medical concerns, nesting ideas, cold protection, etc., etc., etc. I usually find a thread on BYC that covers what I'm looking for, so I really don't know why it took so long for me to join.
