Chicken Genetics

Most refer to leaking as red or white or some color being in the plumage and the color is not wanted in the plumage. The extended black allele is the only E locus allele that should leak non-black. All of the other E locus alleles should show red or white produced by the silver or gold alleles. Black birds should be Extended black, gold or silver and a melanizer or two to make sure no silver or gold leaks through the hackles etc.

In the case of the cbm the copper is wanted!

Does that mean bcm are double gold in the males? And single in the girls?

Can BCm then be used as the rooster in making sexlinked chicks?

BCM x barred hen
BCM x silver hen

black sex linked yes BCM x barred rock

red sex linked no- chicks will be black backed and you can not always go by the face color. They may not even have gold or silver on their face. And depending on other factors they can have gold (female) on face and be silver (male).

I see some chickens that are lemon barred, but I have a carmel colored (buff?) barred boy. Is lemon the same as buff? THe colors done' look the same to me. Lemon, looks yellow.

What makes a yellow barred bird?

HI Arielle,

My understanding is that the lemon barred, have the white stripes, like my roosters below. I had a buff hen and she was darker then my lemon hen. The problem becomes when people start crossing the lemon barred and a buff, and advertising it as a lemon barred.

for some reason my pic wouldn't load.

You are full of questions.

Lemon ( citroen, citron) is a color that can be obtained by different genetic makeups. I think the real lemon color appears when the birds yellow- otherwise they are cream colored or they are a diluted buff color. The birds in the previous post are barred and the barring is diluting the buff/red color in the birds.

You get a good lemon color in the hackles of lemon blues and in some males of other varieties.

Enquiring minds want to know!

I have one buff barred boy and didn't put 2 and 2 together. I realized today when I looked at my cuckoo marans that the boys are not the same color as the girls. The boys are very black and white looking, and the 1 pullet is more gray and black. ALl because of the dilution effect of the barring gene. Eureka!! SO now I read your post. how the red is diluted by the barring and I have a better idea how to make more buff barred.

THe lemons are very interesting. ANd are clearly different in color from the buff barring,

I realize this is basic stuff to all who have been studying this for years and mostly likely a lifetime. THank you for y our answers.
