(Chicken got a cold?) Added Info.(MS/MG,ILT,CRD,NPIP)

Okay, forgive me for asking a stupid question, but if most all birds have CRD, and they can become 'immune' to it through the egg, wouldn't it be better for all birds to have it? It seems like CRD is not necessarily a killer, except for maybe a few, and it is not passed on to humans, or any other mammals, for that matter. So wouldn't it benefit the birds to be immune to this? Especially since it can be transmitted by wild birds?

Well here is the thing.. if you don't have it, why bring it in? In my experience it came back. How many times would it have returned? How many birds could it have infected? For me it wasn't worth the risk. You may have a completely different result.

This is an excellent reference and has helped answer a lot of questions.
Thank you Spook.

I'm now convinced my birds are infected with MG. Most of my silkies
have runny noses and sneeze, one has pussy eyes, but I have had no
losses.

My layer flock is mostly ok with the exception of my RIR who has had a
hard moult this year and sneezes a lot.

All the birds are eating and drinking fine and there is no odor.

I'm also convinced that a combination of higher than normal ammonia
levels, a very cold winter with periods of warm days, and a lack of ranging
have contributed to this.

I tried Terramycin for a week but it has made no difference.

I have read all the posts here and am really freaking out right now! I have a hen that is wheezing, but she does not have sneezing or runny nose or any other symptoms. She did have prolapse yesterday and has a case of the nasties back there. No diarrhea, eating fine, drinking ok. She does not seem to be down at all, does she have crd? If she does does my whole flock have to be culled?
Thank you for your time

She is probably fine. The prolapse has most likely reduced her immune
response. If I were you I wouldn't be worried at all based on the
symptoms you mentioned. It can't hurt to seperate her for a while from
the others.

Thank you!

I think I have composed myself now! I have never had a chicken get sick like this, just hatching chick problems once in a while! She is by herself now and seems ok.

I just noticed in my silkie flock that some of my birds have a ellowish nasal discharge. There are noother symptoms except for my two buffs are having a slight respitory problem I think. I looked up threads about CRD but I dont know if its the cause of this.

I'm getting over an MG outbreak at my place. The best thing i did was to STOP medicating. I tried for months to get rid of it, and when I stopped trying, it cleared up. I had one loss. I've really come to the conclusion that not medicating is the way to go (for ME, not everyone) with outbreaks. The ones that make it develop a resistance to it, and the ones that don't.. well they were just going to continually get sick. By letting it run it's course, i've built up the strength of the flock in general. It may seem harsh, but it's what worked for me. I noticed the beginnings of it right after hurricane Ike (I remember because I was outside burning brush when I heard the first sneeze.), and i'm just NOW getting it gone. I have one sussex that's still snotty. Everyone else is completely back to normal.
To everyone that has to deal with it, good luck. It sucks like nothing you've ever seen, but it's inevitable. MG is absolutely everywhere.

I also wanted to throw this out from the original post:
"most of the flocks were MG positive and negative for common viral infections. Unless a flock owner maintains mycoplasma -free flocks by avoiding multi-age, multi-breed; multi-species flocks, practices all-in, all-out stocking; screens poultry from wild birds, practices basic biosecurity; and regular serological monitoring; purchasing MG/MS free poultry does not do much good."

We're all going to have to deal with it sooner or later.

You've been dealing with this for 6 months?!! (hurricane Ike was early Sept.)
What symptoms did you have or do you have a thread dealing with it you could direct me to?
