We had friends over for dinner tonight and the kids were playing in the backyard with the chickens. Our friends' four-year-old apparently hit one of the chickens with a stick. Now it's just laying down with its eyes closed. It's still breathing but definitely seems to be in pain. The injuries are not readily apparent. How can I help save this chicken? :(

I have no idea, it depends on what size the stick was, where she was hit. Can you take her to the vet to get her checked out?? Maybe someone else can help. I'm sorry, but I'm fairly new here, so I don't know much, unfortunately. But I hope someone can help, and REALLY hope your hen gets well again.

There's probably not a lot you can do other then to put her in a dark, quiet place and see how she does. Sometimes they get shocky and just need time to recover. If you have access to an avian vet and want to go that route then an x-ray is always very helpful to determine what you are dealing with.

Our chicken stayed in a basket in our laundry room last night. She is still alive this morning, awake and looking around, but hadn't moved an inch. Not interested in food or water, either. I lifted her up a little to check for poop, and her butt is very poopy. She stood for a moment, then settled back down in her basket.

Any advice for this morning? Other than taking her to a vet.

Just in case anyone was wondering, she's doing better. She's back outside with the other chickens. Moving really slowly, but doing a lot better. So thankful.

Glad to hear she's doing better

You might pamper her a little with extra treats, scrambled eggs and such to help her recover. This helped one of mine when she was looking down. Or maybe it didn't and time helped her heal. Anyway, it made me feel like I was doing something to help.

Good!!!That makes me happy. As SixChickFlock said, maybe some treats every now and then will get her a bit more excited.
