Chicken Injured by Predator (Graphic Images)

I believe it's essential to keep ointment on it to prevent infection and stop the wound drying out resulting in necrotic tissue. If you haven't been putting anything on it it sounds likely either there is now necrotic tissue or infection is setting in, but without photo's impossible to say. Have you given him any antibiotics?

I haven't given him antibiotic but I will put more ointment on it right now.

I had a duck also attacked by a predator, (otherwise known as my drake) and she had a pretty bad scratch on the back of her head, and her eyes were swollen shut. I would recommend lots of ointment. I washed her wounds with warm water as well and placed her apart from the other ducks. are you sure it was a predator? I could have been another chicken, and in that case, you'll need to find out whos doing it to prevent further injury.

Let me correct myself, the ointment I have been using is triple antibiotic ointment, but as far as oral antibiotics I havent given him any.

I think it was a predator. There was a track of feathers through my yard and a huge pile of feathers near the road :( it looks like you can also see where something slid in the mud where they had a scuffle sometime within all of it. Its a wonder he is alive. I have two other hens, hopefully it wasnt one of them! :(

I made him some eggs and oatmeal yesterday evening also and he has been eating on it.

poor rooster. As long as he's moving about and eating fine, and you haven't noticed any changes in his behavior, he should be healing up quickly!
Hens typically don't attack roosters... and I doubt a hen could do much damage. Keep applying ointment routinely, and just keep doing what you're doing. make sure to keep us updated if it gets worse.

Hes also been picking some at it. At first he acted like he wanted to but was too sore to do so. So at least he isnt feeling as bad.. could it be because its itching and healing up? Or does it look like its infected or necrotic?

I am trying to post updated pictures from today. Its almost been a week though and he still isnt healed up :( I have him inside still, and he is still eating and pooping and crowing. I tried to trim back some of the feathers and wash it out with soap water and diluted iodine again yesterday, but I ended up making him bleed just a little bit so I decided to leave it alone and see if it heals up. I heard that a wet wound delays healing. There is something in the very bottom of the wound that looks a little gross and Im hoping its not infected.
Do you notice any odor coming from the wound?
I would keep the triple antibiotic ointment on it.
Any way you can get a photo of what is gross at the bottom of the wound?

It's best to let it heal from the inside out. It can take several weeks for a large wound like that to heal up. I have one that had a minor wound and it has taken a good 3 weeks or so.

Are you in the US?

You cant see it too well, but its the stuff I circled that I was wondering about.

I have also put Triple Antibiotic Ointment on the inside of his wound a few times a few days or so ago, maybe a couple. Could that be what I am seeing? How long does it take ointment to soak in? Or does it look more like infection?

If it was infected, you should detect a foul odor.

Could be Neosporin, I just don't know!
I would try to flush that out. You can use diluted betadine, chlorhexidine or saline.
