Wow, I just read all of this story and it is amazing! I especially like the part where you let the previous owner to catch Big Chicken himself.
Are you going to keep on calling her Big Chicken? And how's the book coming along?

LOL If I do a movie she will have to play herself...and then she will get all stuck up lol!! And tomorrow is re banding day. I keep the coop locked up and put em out one at a time when I get the new band on. I will get pics then. Im going to get a band on her as well and ill leave her till last. That way I can try handling her some. Hope it goes well!! So......pics posted tomorrow evening looks likeSo..........we need more pix. of 'her majesty' please..........when's the movie coming out?Sue![]()
Just read through all the posts and now subscribedI'm SO happy she is staying with you rather than her previous owner, she will be in a lot batter hands! Also I wanted to add that I agree that you should band her at night. It'll be a lot easier and less stressful on her. A lot of my birds are pretty flighty and if I ever need to look them over or do anything with them, I wait until they are roosting at night.![]()

If it were me I would band her at night...less traumatic stress...so far you've not pushed your boundaries with her and she's starting to trust you....I also would let her out some where in the middle...as not to confirm her low pecking order status..but that's just my opinion.
Oh I need to restate something I wrote.. my rir are not cruel mean...but they rule the joint..they are first to meet me when I come in.
With her traumatic background picking her up against her will will put u back a few steps, I would band her this evening, then tomorrow when u band them all keep her in and sit with her and see how close she will allow ur hand, and if she isn't happy there is nothing forcing you to have to pick her up and just let her walk past u without touching her.
Ok so I read through what every one wrote. I was wondering the same thing. and I dint have all my banding stuff ready but I DID go out to the coop went inside and turned on the light. I reached for her gently and talked soft. Put my hands over her and PICKED HER UP!!! ok so I know not such a big deal to pick a chicken off the roost at night but still. Felt really good. I talked soft to her and she was talking soft back. I petted her and gave her a little neck scrittch and gently put her back on the perch. So tomorrow I will start the banding and about halfway through (sooner if she seems to spooked) I will see if she will let me pick her up. If not I will let her out and band her tomorrow night. Hows that sound? I HELD BIG CHICKEN!!! lolI'd go out and band her now if it were me...that way shed be done and out of the way
