My 6 month old chicken layed an egg without a shell tonight after she’d gone to bed why did she do that.I did notice that she was acting a little weird today but I figured that since she started laying last week and have been laying an egg every single day since she started laying and yesterday she layed an egg triple the size of her normal size egg she was recovering but why did she lay a egg without a shell after she gone to bed?

New layers sometimes take a little while to work the kinks out of the system. Several of my girls layed soft shell eggs at first too and they were almost always at night from the roost. The extra large egg may have temporarily depleted her calcium supplies as well. What kind of food are you feeding your flock? Do you also supply extra calcium like oyster shell or crushed egg shell on the side?

Thank you for your answer, right now she is the only girl in my flock of 5 who is laying so they are all getting grower feed but she is getting shells on the side😊

I'm in the same boat as OP, one of our hens just started laying but has been laying either shell less or very soft shell eggs. She has laid roughly 6-8 soft shell/ shell less eggs. Now its been roughly a week and she hasn't laid any.

🤔 I don't think any of my girls laid more than 2 in a row - unless I just didn't find them. The extra calcium is very important. I would make sure to supply extra calcium even if you are feeding layer feed if you aren't already.
She may also need a jump start on her calcium levels. You can try giving her a human calcium pill. We use a 600mg + vit D3 pill. You can give one to her every day for a few days to see if that helps with her shell formation.

Since i have a mixed age flock I have been giving all flock feed with a bowl of oyster shell on the side along with BSF larva like every other day if not almost everyday. Thinking of switching to high protein layer feed since my youngest hen is old enough now for the calcium. I have been thinking about giving her D3 pills to help her out.

can a chicken take the whole pill or do i need to crush it/ cut it up? and is it one pill a day?
