Hi,

I have an 8 month old peking cross hen. She has been laying at the bottom of the coop on the straw breathing shallowly and looking very floppy. When I went in to check food this morning at 06:30 she was up and eating layer pellets even though it was dark. She also fell over yesterday. I thought she had maybe injured a wing as she looked a little sorry for herself, but on checking it it seemed fine. She has been eating and drinking fine and doesn't seem to have lost any weight.
She seemed a little peaky over Christmas, but then picked up again.
I'm new to chicken ownership and not sure what I'm missing.
Her poo is ever so slightly yellow, but I had thought it was fairly normal.
She hasn't been vaccinated, but her 4 coop mates have been (different suppliers)
I don't think she's ever layed, but I was wondering if she was egg bound?
Any help or suggestions of what I need to look for would be appreciated, thank you!

What color is her comb compared to the ones who are laying? Is it purple or a brighter red than the others? Feel her abdomen under her vent. Is there a bulge? Does it feel hard or soft and squishy?

Feel her crop. Does it feel full and squishy? Or hard and lumpy? Or empty?

Check her for wounds. Look for red, swollen skin or oozing sores. Look at her feet and legs. Any black scabs and swelling? Are her scales lifting up and do they look any different from the other chickens?

Have your chickens been in the coop all the time or do they get out to roam? There's a possibility she could have gotten into something toxic.

Hi @Bron :frow Welcome To BYC
Do you have a vet that can see her?
Can you post some photos of the poop and of your pullet?
Is her crop emptying overnight?

How does her abdomen feel - any swelling/bloat or feeling of fluid?
What food/treats do you feed?

Since she is having difficulties with breathing is getting around, if possible separate her. Bring her in or place her in a cage inside the coop so she doesn't get picked on.

See if she will drink for you. Feed is not important for a day or so, but getting fluids into her is.

Look forward to the photos and more info, hopefully we can give you better suggestions.
