Hi
I am looking for some advice please.
We have a chicken called Omlet which she kind of found us.
We got her end of October I don't think she was very old when we first got her,in fact we are pretty sure she had not reached the age of laying eggs, but obviously I can not be sure of this.
Then at the start of January she started to lay,she layed an egg every day without fail. Then after about a month she layed a thin shelled egg. So I started giving her vitamin D supplement regularly in her water. If I remember correctly I think she did not lay for about three days ,than she started to lay regularly again normal egg every day.
Then out of the blue last wk she layed just yolk and white and a tiny piece of thin shell. The next day she was unwell just standing there not eating or drinking much so I took her to the vets.
They could not feel anything stuck, but said she could have egg peritonitis, her temperature was only very very slightly up.She was prescribed antibiotics for seven days. On the 3rd day on the antibiotics she was back to her normal self, just not laying.
Then on 7th day on antibiotics she layed another thin shelled egg.The next day she layed what looked like just the white of an egg.Than next day another thin shell egg and became ill during the day same as before so that evening took her back to vets. Temperature was not high. The vet said she could not feel an egg stuck in her but she has fluid in her belly and while taking her temperature a load of clear fluid came out. Has been given antibiotic injection and tablets Furosemide 20mg half a tablet twice a day for the fluid in belly. If she seems better today than to get some antibiotics of vet in tablet form. The vet has told me to keep her shut in her coop in the dark as need to break the egg laying cycle and to stop giving her layers pellets and not to give her rich foods etc. She thinks it will happen again so she is saying if she pulls through this we could have her have a hormonal inplant so she does not lay.If she shows no sign of improvement in a day the vet has said she may have to be put to sleep.Just been out to her to give her some food and she doesn't want to know about it,not at the moment anyway. She is drinking a lot of water seems more than usual. But the thing I completely forgot to tell the vet is Omlet has not been on her vitamin D supplement for approximately a month as I ran out of it and thought she would be ok.This may or may not have anything to do with her laying thin eggs. What are your thoughts?Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Jayne
