I’ve just discovered tonight that my chicken had lice 🙁 I have two chickens total, I havn’t checked the other one however I plan on treating both regardless.

I’ve looked up other threads on how to treat and what not, however I am located in Canada, which means product availability is unfortunately scarce.. The closest co-op has a product available called Lice-x, which is a bovine product that contains 1% permethrin. Can i use this? If not, does anyone have anything they can suggest?

I’d like to treat the girls asap to avoid further illness!

Thank you!

Unfortunately it seems to be unavailable everywhere..
Can you find any other products with Permethrin?

I'm not familiar with the Lice-X that you mentioned. I'm not sure if you would need to dilute it down a bit more for use on poultry or not.

Do you have a pigeon or falconry supply store? Sometimes you can find Lice treatments for birds in those types of stores which would be easier to use.

The LiceX with 1% permethrin should work, but you need to dilute it for chickens. I think chickens are treated with 0.5% permethrin. Do they sell lice powder or garden dust? Sulfur powder can be effective on lice and mites. I would also call your vet since they might suggest a spot-on type treatment.

Did you sort it out?
Minor Brothers sells Bronco Fly spray (intended for horses) but everyone in my local chicken FB group says to use it. We used it (sprayed under each wing once and vent once) and reapplied 7 days later. No live lice anymore but I’m wondering how to get rid of the eggs that remain? i don’t think they’re alive but there’s still egg clumps in my hens feathers. Any thoughts???

Welcome. Lice eggs hatch in about 10 days, so if you watch for lice hatching or retreat after 10 days, it should take care of the eggs. It is a good idea to empty the bedding in nests and coop, and spray coop, nests, and roosts.

Thanks - this hen was given to us and is separate from our flock at the moment. We’re eager to introduce her as it’s been 3 weeks and the small secondary coop really isn’t sufficient for her so she’s been free ranging (but we’re in the suburbs and that’s not ideal for our situation). Do you think if I wait the 10 days after the last spray and don’t see any live lice, I could introduce her to the flock? what would you do
