chicken lice

ok.. so i have 3 pens.. in the big coop 8 4 month old chickens, nxt to the coop 2 ducks, and in the yard 2 old hens.... my old hens have lice!!

i feel like a horrible mommy! she had a big hunk of eggs above her vent and so many bugs in her!! i dusted them with DE and was wondering how ofter should i do this? how long does it usually take to get them gone?

From what I've been researching (my chickens have mites) the DE won't always work once their infected, it's more of a preventative thing. Although sounds like some people have had success. I went and got some Sevin Dust today and will be dusting all my chickens and their coop tomorrow. You do it once and then again 10 days later to kill any eggs that may have hatched.

Cover the eggs and lice with VCO, unrefined virgin coconut oil. It will dissolve the exoskeleton of the lice as well as break down the egg casing. Should do the trick with one dose.

coconut oil is good for everything! Lol. Thanks everyone! The farm store said dusting a few times will take care of it.. But I'll apply oil too!

Let us know how the vco works.

Everyone here who has tried it as far as I am aware of has had great success. Of course I looked like this

applying it.
Also completely calmed down the red bottoms overnight.

Coconut oil? I'm going to try this later! I was told to wash with dawn but this sounds so much healthier.

I also have tea tree oil so in going to mix up a container of coconut oil lightly sprinkled w de n a drop or 2 of tea tree

do i need to treat my coop??? DE is working but slowly... im going to get sevin or garden and poultry dust. but is their anything else i need to do to the coop? i have taken out all ther old bedding and put DE on everthing..

The lice is one but today I had to put down my hen Red :,( she had then wen I got her and the owners didn't know she had it.. Enemia got her :,(
