Chicken LORE Project - Find & Submit Local Chicken Laws & Ordinances

Both Salt Lake City proper as well as South Salt Lake City where I live are both chicken friendly.
Here is the link for the Salt Lake City Ordinance, and here is the one for South Salt Lake. Incidentally, both municipalities are also bee friendly.
You are allowed to keep up to 15 hens in Salt Lake City, and 4 to 6 in South Salt Lake, depending on the size of your lot. No roosters in either city.

Hey and for some of you in Canada, I know that Gatineau put in a chicken ban just a few years ago, Ottawa is a no-no but the around it areas(perth, almonte etc) will be pretty easy to sway in your favor if they're not already allowing chickens. Victoria is a yes and Calgary is having a rooster fight with itself over chicken ordinances, though I think chickens will win out with it's historical roots to it. Hamilton is I think once again debating it. And that is all I know.

I'm glad to announce that the village of Glen Carbon, Illinois allows chickens!
Received this today:
My name is Jamie Foster and I am the Public Service Officer and Animal Control for Glen Carbon Police.
Sure, you can have a pet hen; you can have up to three pets (any combination 2 cats & a hen, 3 dogs, etc…) with limitations on exotic pets.
If there are complaints from the noise (most common comp on chickens) we will have to re-visit whether the animal is a pet or considered a barn animal.
I have several residents with one or two chickens with out problems.
If you have any further problems or questions please don’t hesitate to call.

Sincerely, Jamie Foster

I am going before our city ordinance council and would love a copy of the letter you sent!
Thank you very much!

1. Is it possible to download the chicken LORE database for a selected state and/or the whole thing - in a spreadsheet?

2. I'd sure appreciate hearing from the good people on this forum - your suggestions about how to oppose a new ordinance that would force backyard chicken/duck households to get expensive special land use permits in Cobb County, GA.

3. Also appreciated are your suggestions for a sensible/fair local code model that we can promote...?

Thanks!

A summary of what is being proposed:

Special Land Use Permit to own a chicken or a duck. You would have to do the following:
• file an application for a Permit at least two months in advance
• include a $1,000 application fee- which is non refundable if the permit is denied
• include a $300 refundable deposit for County signs that have to be posted on their property, and cost $9 each
• include a current plot plan and boundary survey stamped by a registered engineer, architect, land planner or land surveyor
• attend the Zoning Hearing
• send a first class letter to all property owners within a 1,000 foot radius

After all of this, your application will be subject to the normal fifteen special land use considerations, and an addition four considerations, just for animals- including the number of animals, the size and architectural style of the coop, and buffering or screening measures for adjacent properties.

My sister in law lives in Fowler, CA and I can't find anything in the muni code that says yes or no regarding chickens, does anyone have any info? That is Fresno county.

So I just discovered my home is 2 street in one direction and 1 in another from another very small town within a much larger town. This smaller town has much more lenient laws on chickens and animals in general. Does anyone have any experience getting their property repositioned as far as boundary lines go? Basic on my street chickens are illegal but 2 or 1 streets away depending on which way you go they are legal.

Hi, Sorry I couldn't find the quick way to submit this new ordinance which allows chickens within township limits :)! A lot of work went into making this 1 year fight a reality.

West Brandywine Township, PA, 19320
http://ecode360.com/documents/WE1756/public/33141561.pdf

high level summary: 20,000sq ft lot minimum, 5 chickens allowed @ 20,000 then 1 chicken for each additional 5,000 sq ft. - no more than 24 chickens on any non-agricultural lot less than 4 acres... allowable sale of eggs to end users but not commercial exchange.

etc etc etc :) enjoy the read it took a lot of township meetings to arrive at and reasonably discuss this topic.
there were extremists from both sides that made it very interesting during township meetings - from "I hate birds and people" to "but i need 60 birds, on my 1/4 acre lot, to save me from the zombies"!

i'd recommend to approach township/city officials in a level headed nature offline without a huge public forum first - take the mid-stream route about environment and your only battle is Hens. I repeat, Pick your winable battle - no city dwellers want roosters.
Finally, remember it's not personal and good luck.
