Hi everyone! I don't know why I didn't join this group sooner. I got my first chickens last summer with the plans for only 4. I did a little research and decided on Dominiques. Well, before I even received the ones I ordered, I had adopted a "gimpy" white silkie from the local store. He was my first chicken and aptly named at the time, Gimpy. He's since been renamed Napolean for his short stature complex and terrorizing (attempted anyway) ways. I received my Dominiques and of course, I couldn't separate them so ended up taking all 10 home. Adopted a white phoenix rooster soon after, because it needed a home (wasn't aware "Gimpy" was a he at the time). Shortly after, took in another unknown buff orpington, which I soon figured out was also a rooster. So, it was obvious what I had to do. I needed more girls to balance out the boys! (See that chicken math in full effect so far!) I ended up with 2 female Buffs, 1 silver laced Wyandotte and 2 silkies (for the little guy). My little flock was complete (or so I thought). When I adopted the silkie females, the gentlemen gave me eggs to hatch. (How nice of him!) I successfully hatched 7 and kept 3 as well as somehow picking up 3 blue andalusians, 1 old english gamebird and adopting a golden laced Wyandotte and Australorpe. Wow! Right? Well, that's not all!
I wanted to see what my crazy flock was producing so I hatched 3 of my eggs. They are super cute right now, just now getting their feathers and I also have 5 Isbars the same age. They are all great and get to free range - which I think helps the roosters get along.
I recently opened a small feed store in my community and love to learn as much as I can from others and share. I have 3 dogs, a rat, a few parakeets, a mouse and lots of squirrels in my yard. I have a great husband who supports my crazy and a little boy that enjoys the animals too. I am a BC survivor and it has given me a greater appreciation for life. As you can imagine, I stay crazy busy but life is short and we only get one chance to make it great! I look forward to learning from you guys!!
