Chicken math prevailed!

For now, our flock stays at 24....... until I have to go back to get feed and they end up getting something in that I just can't say no to. :th Does everyone have this problem? I can't help myself.

YES! I originally only planned for two ducks. I now have fifteen! Granted I keep having to order females bc I have too many drakes and I can't bring myself to cull some of them. When I raise an animal from babyhood to adult. I get attached. So nope. Fifteen ducks and counting. Plus the chickens and geese. LOL[/QUOTE]

So, how many chickens and geese? Hahaha!! I also have to laugh at myself because I couldn't say no and since I first posted this thread we lost one chick and gained 12 more because.... chicken math... 12 to replace the one we lost.. it makes all the sense. When you order females are you still ending up with drakes? Orrrr are you hatching and ending up with drakes?

Well, when we get our chickens from tractor supply, we only had to buy 4 at a time. 12 is a lot to replace 1! Lol. So we originally started with 4 chickens, lost 2, then got 4 more, so after this most recent loss, we now have 5. As for the geese, just a pair. One gray and one buff delwap Toulouse. I don't think my neighbors would appreciate if I got more geese. They aren't noisy much of the time but when they are, they are SUPER loud. Like when a car alarm goes off. Haha.
The reason we had so many drakes is for two reasons, we didn't know the sex from the first 5 we got and ended up with 3 drakes and 2 hens. So we ordered 2 more hens. They went broody and hatched out 5 babies this summer. This time 3 hens and 2 drakes. So I had to order more hens! Lol. I ordered 4 more. And I keep getting different breeds because it's fun to watch this diverse flock of mixed birds running around the yard. I have people tell me on Nextdoor app they love driving by and seeing my birds out there. I live on the corner of a busy road as the first house in my subdivision. So they can go all the way to the main road and people can see them through the chain link fence.

Pic is of the latest 4. My daughter fell asleep cuddling with them. Lol. Good thing I have duck diapers coming in the mail today! They poop a lot and puppy pass are getting expensive.

Awwwwwwwwh!!!!!!!!! Okay, I love this story for so many reasons!! I want to one day be able to be like, "Yeah, I have a pair of geese!" Hah! I also love to have diversity in my flock! Found out today that my single Cuckoo Marans has feathered legs! Which, if I read correctly, makes her a French Cuckoo Marans. We have three Calico Princesses that were all supposed to be Buff Orps. 4 black mystery chickens that may or may not be Black Australorps. And a bunch of others, all different breeds.

We have a 6 chick minimum at our TSC and they got in breeds I had wanted from the beginning before we lost our first to a cat. So, before Nevermore died, I got six.. 2 Silver Laced Polishes, 2 RIRs and 2 Lavender Orps. Then Nevermore died and I call the last 6 the replacements. But they're honestly a couple of the breeds I absolutely wanted from the start. And two breeds that I just thought might be cool to have. 2 Light Brahmas, 2 Salmon Faverolles, 1 ISA Brown and 1 Black Asian (We'll see if the asian is actually an asian. I don't trust TSC). Really, 6 chicks to replace 1.. and only because I can't buy less at a time. Lol.

What a sweet picture!!! Are you picking up puppy pads at your local dollar store? I know you can get small packs for fairly cheap but I haven't done the math to see how much you might actually save. Just a thought while you're searching for and waiting for ducky diapers.

So apparently our TSC gets the boring regular ole' chicken breeds. Lol. We have nothing so fancy. I don't even remember the breed names. We have "Dotty" the black spotted with the white dots. "Vera" is entirely black but has an iridescent sheen on her that looks like an emerald green when the light shines just right. Then the brown chickens and one orangey/brown. Those still haven't been name yet. But I always wanted one of them super feathery chickens. Lol.
The geese were bought to protect the flock after losing Penny to a hawk attack. She was a pretty copper color..and the favorite, which made it especially sad to lose her. Since the geese grew into adults, we sometimes see hawks circling, but none dare touch down with those giants strolling around back there. And I love talking to them. They bow their long necks and do this quiet "fuff fuff fuff" that I then bow and repeat back. We go back and forth for a few min like this. Then my summer batch of female ducks always give me (aka Momma, since I got to see them hatch and raise them to Jr adults before introducing them to the backyard) a loud QUACK QUACK QUACK greeting as soon as they put eyes on me. It makes returns home from running errands quiet eventful. Lol.

I bought puppy pads online because the low quality ones leak, which are worthless when the good ones absorbs their watery poop better. And I found a seller on Amazon that sold 300 pads for $50. I had been buying at Walmart 50 pads for $10 but the box of 300 are bigger in size and better quality.

Black spotted with white dots sounds like maybe a Barred Rock? Lol. Entirely black with the green sheen sounds like Black Australorp or Asian maybe? No telling for sure without seeing, obviously. I've got 4 Barred Rocks (yellow legged jerks at the moment) back there and pretty sure 4 Black Australorps. Brown chickens and orangey/brown.. :lau You sound like me! My 2 EE's are my Halloween chickens. They're orangey/brown/black and fluffy looking. :gig

Awh!!! That's so sweet!!!!! I cluck at my girls and half the time they look at me like I'm stupid. The other half, they're waiting for treats.

Oh that's a GREAT deal!!! I totally get that the low quality ones don't work well. Lol. Definitely time for ducky diapers!

Also... I learned something fun and interesting a few days ago. I had a referral conference for my son at the school district and for the first time in ages, I decided that I would paint my nails. Make myself look like I do more than hang out with chickens in my backyard all the time. Without thinking about it, I head into the backyard and squat down to love on my girls who actually like me and want to be petted. A few seconds later, here come two of my BRs, running at me, beaks open. They start pecking the CRAP out of my fingers and I can't figure out why! I don't have treats or food or anything and that's real obvious and then it hits me. I painted my nails Wine Red. :th I can't find nail polish remover anywhere in this house so all this week, I've been pecked at every time I try to go do something with the flock. I paint my toenails but I've only ever made the mistake of wearing flip-flops out there once. After Roger's giant CX beak tried to take my whole pinky toe with him when pecking at my nail polish, I never went outside without closed-toed shoes on again. I didn't even think about my fingernails because I never have them painted. Lesson learned. I never want to paint my nails again. :barnie

Oh this made me laugh. You're chicken math is perfect.

i started with 4 barred rock, then got 2 white plymouth rock, then 2 easter eggers, then got 2 olive eggers, then 2 ameraucanas, then i just had to have 2 silver laced wyandottes and then got 3 buff orps...turned out one of them was a roos...after a few weeks, i decided i did not want any roosters, so i rehomed him, when i went to visit him i saw a silkie chicken and i rescued him from the same farm that i donated my BO roos, then went to rural king and got 2 silkies and a white crested polish.....when they were 4 weeks old on a warm florida night i put them outside in the coop ..the next morning one silkie and the polish were gone, eaten by a raccoon....so that left my little 4 week old silkie by its lonesome...sent my hubby to the feed store to get it a companion, and came home with a little baby Buff orp chick, since then went to TSC for the first time to buy chickes cause i wanted some bantams, got 4...2 turned out to be hens, yokohama bantams and the other 2 were cockerels, i rehomed those 2 cockerels...so the little silkie that survived the raccoon issue, turned out to be a roos and the rescue silkie i got is a roos....i still have those 2 roos...then off to rural king , cuz i want a silkie pullet....so i get 3 silkies and 2 frizzles...out of those 5 my one frizzle is crowing and one of my silkies is also crowing, now i just wait and see what the other 2 silkies and the other frizzle do, whether they crow or they lay eggs.....as it stands now i have 4 roos....3 silkies and one frizzle....i hate to part with them , they are so cute,,,,,
