Chicken Math Strikes Again

Interesting. The closest TSC to us is in Idaho about 1 1/2 hours away. I usually only go there if I need something specific that they carry or happen to be going that direction for something else.

Lucky You! I sometimes wish mine was farther away. According to my teenagers, I am no longer allowed to pass through TSC's doors unattended, at least not during Chick Days ... and that's twice a year around here... sigh!

Lol That's true. Right now all my hens are contained in 2 runs, with no proper nest boxes or anything.
I was promised a large shed from someone who didn't want it anymore, but they have to clean it out first, and it's taking FOREVER!
I might just buy them a coop online...
Does anyone know where I could find a coop under $500 that could hold 15 standard chickens? I've done a lot of searching.

Look into a dog run, the kind made from chain-link fence panels You could make do with that and a used dog house for a little while, then attach it to your "free" shed, if it ever comes through. And if offering to help clean out the shed (or volunteering to run to the dump or Thrift Shop for them) doesn't help, keep looking. You'll find one!

Y’all. We have a 15 hen limit. We currently have a flock of 12 layers, and now 12 chicks (we hatched 7 EEs last week, and 2 the month before). I’m gonna need to get real friendly with our neighbors I think!
When people ask me how many chickens we have, I always respond with "Two." When I get the usual funny look, I tell them it's spelled, "T-O-O," as in TOO many!

Lol My biggest issue is the time. XD
Thank you, though!
What coop did you get? Is it still available to look at online?
We didn’t get ours online, and I wouldn’t know where to search for it, honestly. We bought it from someone local, and then added the one below as a secondary as our flock grew.

PSA: I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS COOP. IT IS STRUCTURALLY VULNERABLE OUT OF THE BOX, AND REQUIRES MODIFICATION TO BE PREDATOR PROOF.

You'll spend as much time and money modifying it as you spent on it in the first place. The only places I've ever seen these used effectively were inside a fancy (secure) shed and inside a Fort-Knox style chain link run - and that one had to be undercover and weatherproofed. Unless you plan to set it up in your living room or on your front porch, don't waste your money!

That is exactly what I did with my “so-called chicken coop that would hold 8 chickens!” My run was two dog kennels reinforced with hardware cloth and a solid roof. I weatherproofed the coop and its additional run, had to add more ventilation and made hardware cloth windows out of two solid doors. My chickens would have baked in that little, stagnant coop.

I am adding more ventilation to my smaller coop, today. I just had my first loss to heat stroke - a little Red Pyle OEGB cockerel. RIP sweet Cornelius. Two of the others - both Porcelain D'Uccles - are recovering in my living room. Right now, I'm wishing I had one of those cute little garbage coops in there. Fern and Fella just look so miserable!

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear this. The coop we have we only had to modify slightly, because it had an area of the roof that was completely open by design. We put wire mesh and chicken wire over it, so it still allows ventilation but won’t allow for predators like weasels and oppossoms to get in. We keep the windows open at all times, and the coop is very well shaded by foliage So it has no direct sunlight during spring-fall. In the winter it gets full sun but is so cold that the sun does well to maintain a healthy temperature. We did have to weatherproof the whole thing with a nontoxic wood sealer to keep the wood from warping and rotting from rain and snow though.
