Chicken math

It's awful, 21hens! We need a new section on here for Chicken Math Anonymous.

Naw most of the folks on here would be in recovery and then what would the city counsel have to talk about? New traffic lanes or lights? Pah BOOOORRRRIIIINNNNGGGG. LOL
Besides who is qualified to guide us in recovery?

Baby chickens are like crack once you are hooked you ARE hooked.

We started with 3,one for each of the grandkids.well now we have 12 grandkids, one great granddaughter and we just hatched our 4th chicken generation.and this morning I noticed Fluffy Pants Jr. stealing eggs from her housemates for her nest.she's sitting on 7 now.

Well, what's 5 more, right? I can't get too crazy with mine because of the golf course in my back yard, or I would have quite a few too!! At least two of each breed that I like or find interesting. Plus, my coop will only be 11x8, so only so many will be able to fit. Although, the coop is only half of my bottom porch. Would a 20x 11 coop be too big? LOL

We built a 9X9 foot coop last spring with about a 600 square foot run. Now this spring we're going to fence in almost 1/2 an acre and add another coop. Decided I needed a separate grow out for the young ones. So when you expand that porch put up a wall so you can separate as needed. LOL

You're not helping anything here, lol. And actually I'll have a door on both sides of my half porch coop, and I could just build another coop just like it on the other side. That way, I could walk right through both of them and out the other side!! I may have to rethink my nesting box placement though. I'm looking through a thread right now about nesting boxes, so maybe I can find an alternative route!! :)

I'd love to be able to do that one day. I think that would be really fun, and rewarding too!!
I started with 6 and now have 180 layer hens and 4 rooster s and run a small chicken business.... small but growing.lol. gotta love chicken math.
How many coops do you have, or do you just keep the in a large building?

In reading the responses here ( especially the response from n3kms) I am seriously wondering what I am getting myself into. I am a newbie as well. My plan is to start with 6 hens and one rooster. I have 31 dogs so it is highly unlikely that the rooster would bother my neighbors. I do plan on limiting my flock to just 15 but knowing how often I lie to myself, my coop will actually hold 20. My wife, currently looking over my shoulder, just asked: “how many will the second coop you build hold?” LOL, She who must be obeyed, knows me well. I just retired just under a year ago so I thought raising chickens and gardening would be a great way to keep me busy. But the more I read on BYC, I may have to rethink the garden.

You could always grow corn, wheat and oats in a little section so you could have a good start at making your own feed for the chickens?
