Chicken math

I, my dear people, am proud to be totally immune to Chicken Math. Well, there were the four out of 20 we lost in shipping last year that we went to a feed store to get replacements for so we'd be back up to the even 20. Got two of those....hey, are those Marans? Gee, I love the idea of dark eggs! Oh, and those Speckled Susssex are sure cute. They'd add a nice splash of color to the flock. Came home with 6. But that doesn't count as Chicken math because 2 were replacements and the other 4 would have been in the original order if I'd thought of it. So they weren't really add-ons....they were shuddabeens.

Had to do some culling. Out of 6 feed store chicks 3 were roos. Then a neighbor lost her entire flock to a pack of dogs, so I gave her 8 of mine when they were just starting to lay. Down to 11. Our gorgeous Pearly Girl died, so we were taking care of 10. Agatha went broody, so we ordered eggs. One hatched. He's a roo. But he's Scout the Wonder Boy so he doesn't count either - he's a celebrity, not a chicken. But head-wise we had to count 11.

Lo and behold we decided to expand the flock. Now, again, that wasn't chicken math. That was carefully considered and executed planning. Got 12. Lost one right after getting them home, so down to 11. The next week we went back to the feed store to replace that one. Came home with 4. But one was a replacement and the other was a long awaited dream of Buff Brahmas. Woops, 3 Buff Brahmas turned out to be 3 RIRs two of which are roos. The Mama Heating Pad system for brooding chicks makes things wayy to easy.....and I still didn't have Buff Brahmas. But the hatchery did. Um, what do you mean I have to order a minimum of 8 for my zip code? Well, if it's only way to replace those 3 RIRs with Buff Brahmas, then a woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do. Once again, not chicken math - it was their rule, not mine after all.

So now I have 11 Bigs, 15 Littles, and 8 Tinys. But because I can control myself so well and because I'm immune to chicken math, that will be it. This year. For now.

Edited to add:

I went into the feed store
Just to buy a bag of starter,
I knew there'd be new chicks inside
So today it would be harder.

I walked right past the brooder boxes
Looked neither left nor right,
I heard the little chickies peep
And vowed to avoid the sight.

After paying for my order,
And heading for the door,
I opted just to take a peek,
A quick look - nothing more.

So here I sit in my orange suit,
Waiting my case on the docket-
How the heck do you suppose
Those chicks got in my pocket?

Chicken math got me good. Have a huge coop that existed on the property when we bought it, after renovating I decided to get "some" chickens (since I didn't have a limit to begin with I've done no fowl ;) ) found a local egg hatching crazy and left intending to get 20 chicks, since some would be roos. Once I've got twenty boxed, he counts the remainder in his brooder and its 10, says he'll give me that 10 for $5 (can't go wrong with that!) Well get home and that 10 is 11, giving me 31. Decide to trade 3 of my 10 EEs for 3 wyandottes, since I have none. End up trading 5 for 4 wyandottes and a RIR, since I also didn't have any of those. Then on my way home with them it occurs to me that I have no BRs so I stop at the feed store to see what they've got. End up with one BR, and two pretty mystery chicks. Moral of story 20+ chicken math=34. :) (23 pullets, 11 cockerels)

So it has been 4+ years that I have struggled with the disease.
I wanted 6 mind you just 6 Black Australorp.
It was Mothers Day and we were shopping for dog harnesses at the feed store...... OH they have chicks.... I take a look and yes there were my beloved Black Australorp chicks just waiting for me to take them home. Mind you I had no coop, no brooder, no intention of begging DH once again for chickens.
I mentioned to him how nice it would be to have some BA. He told me to get some.....then he came to have a look in the brooders....... HE decided I could have 2 BA, 2 EE and 2 California Whites. But I just wanted BA and I wanted 6.......years pass.........chicks are bought...........chicks grow and twice when I had finally found a few BA a rooster was hiding as a cute little sexed pullet. Well you cannot just give away a lone chicken even if it is a rooster.........The BA pullets went with them.............more time and more chicks later I still only have the original 2 mind you just 2 BA hens.

Now I have 23 chicks in the chicks portion of the coop. ONE is a BA the only BA they had. JUST ONE. My other hens are now getting old and may not live much longer. I only will have ONE if they pass away. JUST ONE. This cannot be, I must find some BA.

Now a few weeks later I have a broody cochin bantam. I call everywhere around me within reasonable driving distance looking desperately for 3 BA chicks to give her. NONE not a one. NONE coming in this week either.
I did find a place that is getting some Barnevelder chicks on Friday.
Sigh I guess they will have to do.

The search shall continue ............................

I'm on the hunt for jersey giant, polish and lavender orpington. I have 11 now but the silkies (3) don't count. They are just for show. I'm actually planning on looking for them in about 4 weeks when my brooder will be empty. I also want ducks. Ugh do I wait for next year or get them sooner than later?

Maybe what is called for is a Mass Intervention. I started with 6 free chickens. A year and a half later I have 57 chickens, 21 month old chicks, 6 week old chicks, 23 ducks, 4 geese, 3 rabbits, 5 button quail, 3 broodies sitting on 23 eggs and i set 72 eggs yesterday in 2 bators. Yesterday saw a friend who said "Do you want my silkie hens, I dont want anymore silkies" and I said "Sure". Ordering 80 meaties for the may 20 and on sunday going to a poultry and small animal auction. OMG I cant stop. But why would I want to.

Those are fighting words in my family!!! My hubby and family have threatened that for the past 2 years! I know, if I pull in the driveway from work and see a massive amount of cars & I have not planned a party, I am going to keep on driving!!! I have mapped out a plan to enter the back of the property to feed the chickens in case they wait all night. I know that I do not have a problem. If I do, then you do. How can so many intelligent, hard working citizens succumb to the world of chickens? Because, we know what we're doing!

I'm the only one in the family with the disease. Everyone else says, "we have enough" or "you have 6, why do you need 2 more?"

I eventually convinced them to get me 2 more, but soon... Soon they shall be on board the chicken math express!

That is a thought ...... Break them in slowly then they wont suspect a thing when the box of 50 arrives.

LOVE your avatar by the way.

Exactly. Right now it doesn't seem particularly effective. It took me weeks to break them down enough to get me a silkie, but then again, they did get me the silkie, so maybe it's working better than I think. Heheheheheh

And thank you! I found it on the internet and thought it was so incredibly funny <3
