Chicken math

I *think* I have a plan for all my new acquisitions, though. And only one problem. I have a main pen full of maybe 24 chickens of different breeds, age and size. They will produce eggs. I have a pen with just Cream Legbar and one with my Black Copper Maran to raise chicks and hatching eggs. Plus I have the goat yard where the 'extra' chickens have to live. So I will sell eggs, hatching eggs and chicks. I will eat spent chickens. Now I just need a place to grow the babies after they hatch and before they sell. See? a great plan! right??

I don't really know what some of my chickens are in my main pen. There is a darling tiny, fluffy, feather footed Banty hen who lays every day. She came with a variety of chickens from a family that didn't know one breed from the other. All buff or red chickens were RIR according to them and then there were some EE who were any of the others except the Banty. The rooster appears to be a New Hampshire Red. Some of the EE lay tinted eggs. Who knows? The pen started with an Americana roo who is now maybe 6 years old and 6 big hens. A flock of white rocks joined them and then the mixed group came. Soon I brought home a trio of juvenile BO and 4 BM (okay, this is cracking me up! Body Odder and Bowel Movement? NO, Buff Orpington and Buff Minorca.) Then some BCM and yesterday the 6 CLB. And any pretty eggs I get have been placed in the incubator!

I have almost 40 chickens...19 are still in the brooder, need to get them out of there, but have to take care of some meat birds first...

WOW, that is a lot of chickens.

And, and, when they get older they don't lay as much and sometimes they don't lay at all and besides when have we ever had too many eggs?? HAHAHAHAHA I need to learn how to make those cute Icons!

Welcome...And I don't have an incubator yet...My hubby nixed that idea until I get the chickens settled...We have our main coop..Then I have to have a coop for the "bachelors" and a group for my silkies..I'm hoping to hatch some and don't want too many mixes running around..What breeds are in your bators? Good luck and hope you post pics of your wee ones...

It is OK, you only need an incubator if you have eggs that are fertilized and you want them to grow up into chicks.

My hubby didn't know I ordered more chicks til they arrived...He was like "are you done?" I just smiled at him...I need frizzles and jersey giants next...

I know in the country chicken maths not a big deal compared to if you live in the city where limitations are placed on bird owners but for city folk I was wondering is it hard to not go over the limits and if so how do you manage to keep neighbors happy

IF I lived in the city I would have privacy fencing for my neighbors. I would buy lime so there was never a smell and I would 'borrow' roosters from country friends. Most neighbors object to the noise or the odor. If you only have a roo when you need fertile eggs most of the object able noise is eliminated. Even regularly cleaned pens have odor when wet but lime will reduce the smells significantly. Anyone who takes the time to count your hens needs a gift of eggs!

My math won't work out so well. 4 chickens ( to start)+ more chickens = 62 angry neighbors + 1 angry wife = 0 houses + 0 family + 4+chickens

Chickens math isn't worth it ...right now...in this neighborhood

Most neighbors object because they DON'T have a life or they are too stupid to live.
Case in point. Most of the people around here let their dogs AND kids run wild. What they can't tear up or kill they poop on. They DON'T see a problem with it till i shoot their dogs and press no tresspass charges on their kids. Neibor that lives closest to me thinks nothing of putting 4yipping ankle biters in a cage to small for hamsters. They yap from day light to dark. SO I bought geese and chickens. Geese are EXTREMELY loud. Ran into her in the store and she commented on it. Told her to enjoy it.They were purchased specifically because I was tired of listening to her dogs.Her face was priceless. My point to all this is if people concentrated more on their own backyards and less on their neighbors life would be a lot better.No one else's rights supersede my own.And I for one will NOT go out of my way to accommodate a bitchy neighbor. Quite the opposite actually. I've been here on my 4-1/2 acres of all frontage property for 20 yrs. Haven't had a neighbor make it to 5 yet. People that go out of their way to be nice to OFFENSIVE people are idiots. It just encourages more bad behavior.

Sorry to hear @bcAddy . I'm very fortunate! My neighbors LOVE my chickens! Last year we had a few fly over the chain link fence into their yard. I ran over to get them and noticed they were having a party or get together or something. My neighbor came up to me and I quietly apologized for my stray birds and told him I would get them back over to my yard. He said "Nah, they're no problem. Anyways I told them they are my chickens. Just leave them here" LOL! I didn't want to ruin his party, so they stayed there for the day. Came back to the coop that night. This year I have mended the hole in the fence where they were crossing and they don't go over there. My neighbor said he misses them.
