I'd figure most of your chicks will be barred (or cuckoo, depending on what you want to call it), but there is always the chance that some of the hens will have a color trait that is dominant over the barring. I had two BR roost (out of 12 roosters), and ended up with mostly barred rock chicks in many of my hatches. Now, with subsequent generations, I'm seeing more variety. I have also been seeing variations in the barring since the first generations--dustings of gold or splashes of white, bars of gray instead of black, or flecks of color among the black and white. They still look distinctly barred, but with unique little twists on the appearance. Have hope--you may see variety after all!Well I have my first mutts incubating under a mama hen right now. Their dad is a Cuckoo Maran and the mamas are Buff Orpington, Black Australorp, Barred Rock, Partridge Colored Easter Egger, and Delaware. I know the chances of me having all barred rock looking chicks is very very high, but is there anyone out there with a barred dad who threw a different colored chick? Is there any hope for variety?
They seem to pop some out like one of mine does. My others are Rhode Barr's but I've got a mystery rooster with chicks like that!![]()
