Welcome to BYC! There are so many great breeds that lay colorful eggs! People might have different favorite ones based on temperament or other characteristics. As others have mentioned, climate can determine what breeds might work better, too. We have some that lay colored eggs. My personal favorite is my Cream Legbar. (They typically lay a light blue egg.) My girl has really bonded to me.

Hi. Everybody. I'm new to chickens and want to learn everything. What are the best breeds? Ideally I want a rainbow of egg colors but as far as breeds have no idea.
EE(Easter Egger) mixes and white leghorns. The leghorns will lay beautiful white eggs, and the EE’s could lay any color, but usually have green or blue egg color genetics.

White leghorns for white eggs, Easter Eggers for green and blue, Crested Cream Legbars for blue, and French Black Copper Marans for those deep brown to chocolate eggs are my personal choices. I now have the Crested Cream Legbars that are laying better than I expected and they are super friendly but not one that want to sit in my lap (yet). The French Black Copper Marans are to be ordered for a late summer purchase.
