Hello, my good friend!! Didja miss me? I wish I could remember who that was, but I"m glad you do remember the conversation. I don't trust my mind as much as I used to, and I probably shouldn't have even trusted it back in the day!

Mine froze solid and when we thawed them the first time we were surprised to see that within the ice, the mechanism was pushed to the side from the pressure. I had photos, but I can't find them now. Not smart enough to have put them in an album so they'd be here after the conversion, but if anyone wants to see I can probably dig find it again. I think the only one I have is just of the remainder of the icicle while we were thawing and wiping things off, though.

I use both and have the buckets hanging in the run. I have bird bath heaters in the buckets that kick on at ~35 degrees. When the temps get below -10 both types of nipples freeze.

We'll see in the morning if the nipple insulation works or not lol. Just some closed cell foam with a cross shaped knife slit and a little trimmed away because the material is 1" thick and the nipples only stick out about 3/4". I had to thaw up two nipples that froze during the day today with the temps from 13°F to a high of 28°F. I think their favorite nipple is the one that didn't freeze up today.

I did all three and just checked them and they all still work... we'll see come morning.

I'd leave one off as a 'control'.

I have 6, 5 gallon buckets equipped with those horizontal nipples for my 3 flocks, each bucket has 5 nipples. I use 1 bucket in each flock, due to our winter temps here in western N.Y. state I keep the other 3 to change out when the ones in use freeze. I'm thinking on a way to make heated buvkets!!
Been using them for 3 seasons now... no issues.
I also used teflon tape on the threads
