Okay so I got 5 chicks the other day. This will be our first ever batch of chickens! I'm super excited. I don't know if they are hens or roosters yet because we just got them from a friend of a friend and they were a mix (don't worry, we can give the roosters back). I was wondering what breeds these guys might be. I know its hard to tell when they are little.

Mostly I am interested in the little chipmunk. As all of the other guys are getting bigger he/she seems to be staying the same smaller size. Also, the middle red one seems to be very fuzzy and not feathering like the other red we have, it has short stubby wings and a short stubby beak (my husband thought he might be special).

The only one who has feathered feet is our black and white one. And all have bright orange feet except my fuzzy red and the chipmunk. I know its hard to tell but any suggestions would be great. I would love to start researching them a little. Thanks!!

Welcome to BYC from West TN ! It looks like you have a good mixed bunch,, the chipmunk one looks like it could be an Easter Egger, but hard to say. The Gender's still a bit young maybe someone else has some other ideas on Breeds and Gender. Have Fun !

The chipmunk is probably an easter egger, and if the other non-orange legged bird has slate colored legs, then it could be an easter egger too (easter eggers come in a wide variety of looks, as they aren't technically a breed...)

In reality, the first three could all be easter eggers, but with the orange legs on the first one, it's a little less likely...

So it looks like its only been a week since I posted, but these guys are changing so much everyday! I just wanted to put up some updated pictures. I'm guessing these guys - hopefully all gals - are around 3 weeks now judging by their feathering? Still probably too early to sex but any leads on some breeds? I'll keep updating as weeks pass...

In keeping of the order from the picture in my first posting:
Big Red:

Chipmunk, 'Chippy':smallest of my chicks

Lil Red: still pretty fuzzy and has puffy cheeks

Chicken: Developed comb first (which has black on it, not red)

Nugget: I couldn't get a front picture because she likes to hop out / try to fly and run around my house...

Here are the size comparisons for Chippy:

I'd say that any of the first three could be Easter Eggers, though no guarantees of course (the first one's legs are awful yellow for an EE, but that isn't unheard of. The 4th might be a silver laced Wyandotte, but I could be wrong... Can't help you with the last one though...
