Chicken on her deathbed? Please help! :-(

She just passed. Wish I had known how to save her.

So sorry for your loss. :( I just saw this thead and the photo, and sadly by the time they look like that, things are very, very serious indeed. There may have been nothing to do for her at that point.

Usually, when a bird starts to show a sign that something is wrong-- even very subtle signs, it is something that needs addressed. Birds hide any illness naturally, as it may make them less obvious to predators. That is unfortunate for us, though, as they also can hide signs of problems. If any of your other birds show signs of being lethargic, it is a good idea to investigate it as if it is serious, because it might be.

I don't know about Maine, but some states have low or no cost necropsy services as preformed through the state labs/poultry department. If you want answers you can always find out, though it will probably have to wait since it is the weekend. If you decide to go this route, store your hen under refrigeration, don't freeze her. If you don't go the necropsy route, that's okay too, and I wish you all the best with the rest of your birds. I am again sorry that she passed away. :(

The lack of crop motility could also have been a result of her body shutting down due to some other disease process rather then the cause of death itself. There's just really no way to know without a necropsy if you really want an answer. I don't necropsy every bird that dies, only if I am concerned about something being contagious. I hate loosing them and not knowing why but it happens a lot.
