I'm not supporting him How can I support him I don't know him- other than he owns chickens and killed a dog that he felt was threatening his chickens. Don't really have any knowledge of his ability to judge situations- good or bad. Not condeming him either- again I don't know him and only know what's been written about the situation which tells me little. He could very well have had little other recourse but to shoot the dog. I do know that it's never good for chicken owners in general when a chicken owner shoots a dog- that I do know. Public opinion will overwhelmingly be against the shooting of a dog and that will have a trickle down effect as to how municipalities view the owning of chickens and the regulations of them. It might not effect you or me but it will effect some of us at some time and not positively. I also think that BYC contributes to chicken owners being viewed in a negative light for the same reason. That in a nutshell is my issue with allowing the freedom to post illegal means and methods on the website. While shooting a dog may be necessary it is not necessary to talk about it on an open forum and is in fact damaging to chicken owners. Food for thought. I think the Jody has gone beyond providing informative, helpful information. I think she has ties to make the shooting of a dog a heroic act to be championed and the shooter protected and supported. I think that is plain and simply wrong. Keystonepaul

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. In most cases shooting a dog that's after your pets or livestock is legal. Nobody wants to shoot a dog, or any other predator for that matter. FYI talking about dispatching predators is to be expected on the predator section of a chicken forum. I love dogs. I have one that I spoil rotten and take very good care of. Part of taking care of him is keeping him in my yard. Poultry keeping is a growing hobby. Irresponsible dog owners need to know that they can't let Fido run. People have rights. They can protect their property. I don't think that shooting a dog is heroic. It may be necessary, but not heroic. I do think that arresting a person for protecting their property is an injustice. Don't you? If you feel that people should just turn a blind eye when they see injustice, then perhaps you are the one that is plain and simply wrong.

The bolded is the only thing I am going to comment on... The shooter IS protected and IS supported by the written laws in 90% of the cases. I am sorry but I am supporting him and any other people who end up needing to shoot a dog because the laws were written so we CAN defend our properties, animals, etc. We shouldn't be condemned because we are invoking our right by the Castle Docturine and the Laws. I am sorry if you feel we are wrong for protecting our own, but we are within our rights and within the laws, that is why we are protected. We are supported because NOONE like to kill a dog, or any other animals for that matter, so we need a place to vent and to seek comfort...Like a support group.
I don't support him. He probably could have shoo'd the dog away some other way besides shooting and killing it.
His chickens were in a cage, anyways. Right?

According to the dog owner's flier, the guy shot it with a pellet gun and it wasn't deterred. He then shot it again and killed it. It seems that he tried deterring it with nonlethal means, and it didn't work. SOme dogs just can't be deterred that easy.
i have chickens and love them dearly but it was insane that he shot the dog... if you look at his coop the dog couldn't have gotten to the chickens. i do not support him in ANY way and i agree that the guy should of had a leash on the dog. Shooting the dog should of never crossed his mind. i hope he gets convicted.

I believe we have addressed this. Chickens can be scared to death, or frightened into breaking their necks by hitting the sides of the cages. I have seen very few chicken pens a dog could not get into, given the chance. Unless they have concrete floors, or wire buried several feet down and are heavy gauge welded steel wire (not the 2 x 4 fence wire) and have a top of the same wire, a dog can get in. I have had dogs go through that 2 x 4 fence wire. I have OWNED dogs that eat chainlink for breakfast. My first chainlink kennel held my first working line German shepherd for all of 30 minutes.
It is not as easy as some think to keep dogs OUT. Best situation is for owners to keep their dogs home. Since this will never happen, we sometimes need to be able to protect our animals on our own property.
I, too, support "the shooter" as I am giving him the benefit of the doubt that this was his only option to save his flock.
