Well, the Oregon Revised Statutes page search function seems to be down right now... Otherwise, I'd see if I could find how they define 'corporate limits.'

My understanding, however, is that when a city incorporates, it's the entire city. The incorporation is basically how the city is constituted...it's the 'definiition' of the city, if you will, kinda like the US Constitution is the 'definition' of the US.

If I'm right -- and I'm fairly sure -- the 'corporate limits' are what us non-incorporated-city-dwellers would recognize as the city limits, and vice versa..

In other words, interchangeable terms.

Someone should certainly double check me, though..

Yes, I think we are all trying to access the web site ate once. Oh no! We crashed Oregon's web site. Actually some places have "corporate city limits" and "satellite city limits." It all depends on the state statutes and/or county regs.

see, boundry lines are what are going to determine a lot here. According to my address I live in the city of gaines... Gaines is actually a small town, but considered a city..... and there is gaines township...... also incorporated...... yet i live in neither.......... so 3 different levels of zoning just in the little area I call home. And there are only 350 of us in this lil old city.

Then again, things don't need to be complicated. I wish the laws of common sense and not public opinion were used.

Agreed. How about we sit back, enjoy a BLT (the brandywine tomatoes are ripe today), and further contemplate the crazy of it all?

My dogs are members of my family. They are like my children (as I have no human children). I love them more than anything. Because I love them more than anything, I take big precautions to keep them safe. I spend great sums of money on quality food, stashes of toys to keep their minds sharp and frequent trips to the vet . I spent excessive amounts of money on a quality fence. I spent additional money for a hotwire system when one of the dogs figured out how to dig under the fence. I made it a point to go talk to the neighbors and explain that the dogs were never to be out and if by chance they did escape and make it into their pasture, would they please sting them on the butt to scare them and toss them back over in the yard (These are the neighbors that shoot dogs in their pasture.). I love my dogs and want them to stay safe and so I take great care to ensure that they are. They never, ever, EVER are allowed to run free. Period. Even when I lived in a condo with no yard, the dogs were never allowed off leash. Because I love my dogs like family I went to great lengths to see that they had exercise and stimulation.
BECAUSE I LOVE MY DOGS THEY DO NOT RUN FREE.

Maybe to most people a chicken is just a chicken. So be it. But if you love your dog, if it is a special member of the family, you would do whatever you could to keep them safe. You would know where that dog was and what it was doing. A free running, loose, untrained dog is not a beloved family member. The dog owner should be cited for neglect and abuse as well.

1-The dog doesn't need to get through the fence/pen to kill the chickens. The chickens can become injured, even die from flying around in their coop/pen out of fear while the dog is OUTSIDE of their enclosure.

2- according to the article, Mr. harris shot at the dog, and the dog still persisted, so he went to get a bigger gun. So, how is swinging a stick at the dog going to do the trick, if a small gun didn't even do it? and, by the way, i would only swing a stick at a dog that is going after food, if i had backup. what happens when he swings the stick and the dog turns on him?? One Never knows what a dog will do in that sort of situation (where food/prey is involved), even one's own dog.

3-If my chickens are on our property attacking your dog, go ahead and shoot them.

I love dogs, and I am not quick to kill predators. I am in favor of building fort knox, and putting up an electric wire around the whole area to keep predators away. I then deal with predators on a case by case basis, if i need to trap/shoot, whatever. Mr. Harris was on his own property, dealing with a predator harming his birds. He had to make a split decision to protect his property.
It is sad for the dog, but protecting the dog was not Mr. Harris' responsibility, it was the dog owner's responsibility.
