Did he have a phone with him when he was out by the coop? I don't usually carry mine when I'm out in the yard getting hot and sweaty. If something is harrassing my girls I'm going out the back door with a gun and a FLASHLIGHT, not a FLASH BULB!

I really don't think BYC should be the place to disparage the judge should things go against Mr. Harris. I think that would be less than the ideal approach. keystonepaul

In a civil society, it's our duty to make our views known. Judges, politicians and other public sevants will never know the wants and needs of the people if we don't open our mouths and tell them. Judges and politicians should be congratulated by the people when they have done right and disparaged when they have done an injustice. Remember, it's "we the people," not "we the sheeple."

Exactly, well said, Jody! That is exactly what I had in mind when I wrote that post!

We the people can either be vocal about our wants and needs or be quiet about it not making any waves. What is "democracy"??? We are free to express our satisfaction or express our dismay of how the court will rule for Mr Harris and the dog owner. Either way, it is going to be expressed.

Sheep eggxactamundo, no matter how the ruling goes Mr. Harris IMHO got a raw deal. I for one will not change how I deal with predators or my opinion of the importance of my chickens are to someone else dogs running loose. This issue is not only a tragedy for Mr. Harris but one for the dogs who are not loved enough to provide the proper supervision. There is also the many children who have suffered scars or worse from dogs at large. At least this dog suffered a relatively painless demise instead of being ripped apart by other dogs, or run over by a vehicle.

chicken may not be children, but to some dogs they are, more people have been BITEN by dogs that dont bite. Lot of time it bites someone just after the owner told them they dont bite.

Whole point dog owners control your dog,and keep it on your place.

Think if dog owners who let their dogs roam, had to spend a few days in jail. Free roaming dogs would be hard to find. Killing the dogs, small fines dont work. My great neighbors just get more to replace the ones they lost, same with cats. They think they are giving them a good home.

I e-mailed the prosecutor to see if they had figured out if there were charges yet. This was the reply I just got:

No. Still working out a community solution.

It was vague but hopeful.

Two days ago, a black pit bull male dog ran loose in our neighborhood, strayed in our front yard and he gave chase when three kids on their bike was h...bent chasing him down and warned neighbors and us not to touch or catch the dog.

Why?

He bites!

The kids spent three hours trying to catch him. He had escaped from his leash, which I have a hard time believing it since that dog escaped before one night when hubby came back from work from his 3rd shift earlier this year. The dog was growling at him and hubby gave HIM the chase and barked loud, I mean LOUD that it woke up some of the neighbors LOL!

One day, that dog will be click, click, BANG! IF he ever decide to partake one of my chickens!

Jody I know this was asked at the start & so pardon me for asking again but I just can't remember doesn't this "city" have lease laws too??? I mean I understand that this guy shot off a fire arm etc. but there has to be some kind of control over these loose running dogs. That would indeed be a solution.... The idea that the dog owner is going to continue to allow the other dog to run loose I just found mind boggling. I have to say I'm a dog lover but it's because of that I just can't imagine allowing these dogs to run reckless abandon?

It will be interesting to see what happens with all this.
