I'm sorry to hear that about Athena. My son just got two easter egger pullets and he named one of them Athena.

That's her on my lap. ( I think) The other is Minerva.

They are both pretty skittish. One of them flew out of the nesting box when Chris went to check for eggs and he almost lost her. He was a very anxious young man for a few minutes.

On another note I just love that last picture of yours above. That is great! You take some wonderful pics of your babies, I'm so jealous.

I would like to get some EE some day. Good looking bird with a great name. :)

Look who finally seems to be warming up to me! Lucy came up to me tonight while I was securing the barn and cuddled...for long enough a time I was able to fumble for my phone and take a picture! I know I love my chicken when...this is what I tell everybody about!

I soooo want cuddle chicken. Five canines and Cockatoo is not enough, right?

BABY MONITOR---That's a great idea.  We've been thinking a security system with an alert, but I think a baby monitor might just do it.  Well off to amazon to shop!! Thanks for the idea!!

We have travel back to see our family the end of august and I actually think that if we can't find a reliable person, we will be taking the chickens!  LOL  Ahh the joys of loving your chickens!
:love

Right! I have wondered about taking chickens if we have to travel also! We saw used horse trailer used as a coop, so we joke, if trailer is coop, you just close back door and go! Then you ceould use several ex pens put together for out time. Do you mind if I ask, how will you travel?

Another thing we will be doing in future is using motion detector flood lights for another layer of security. We have some on garage, close by, but these will shine close to coop.
We were even teasing, saying we could attach alarm system to light, that sounds off in bedroom. Like red flashing police car light, and have a voice broadcoast: "Warning warning! Danger danger danger! ( Remember him?)
The chick barrier is penetrated! Over and over till we turn it off" Ha ha!
We are into not loosing even one, because they calm my nerves and keep me moving. They are therapy chicks, but I haven't told them yet!

Really devastated this week. My best hen, Penelope, had to be euthanised yesterday morning. We almost had to euthanise her flock sister, Athena, for the same reason yesterday evening but I'm hoping she'll make it through (they both had prolapsed vent that was really bad). I'm pretty ruined by this because I feel like I should have caught this before it got as bad as it did for Penelope because my TBI symptoms have been almost as bad as they were right after my car accident. I've just been in such bad shape (terrible memory issues and extreme exhaustion) and I'm doubting my ability to take care of the rest of my flock after this. She had the best personality, was Odysseus's constant companion, and the hen that would break up fights between the boys and the one who welcomed the new birds without issue. I miss her a lot.
I am so so so sorry. I know from your future post you lost Athena also. I get that bad stuff just happens in life, like a surprise. But I don't get when you are trying to go thru, survive and thrive, you are hanging on by a thread, and then another double whammy like this happens. There is no logical reason. There is no normal life. There is just life.(Quote by Doc Holiday, Tombstone) What are the chances of two prolapsed vents, so close together. These questions have no answers. I recomend not making any big decisions, while you are emotional. If you do not know what to do, my best practice is to do nothing. I know you must be very depressed. I am without children, so my relationships with dogs is alot different than most people. If you give up your flock, you also shut down your subject matter for your art. I have looked at over 100 of your photos, and you are an artist, and gifted with posing chick in one hand, getting them to respond to you for awesome poses. I am thinking you should try accessorizing a little, put a silver chain around a chick's neck to see if you get s pic? You did not cause prolapsed vents!? Hold on day by day. Lisa

I know we need enough room in coop and run, in case there are problems, so there is room to spread out, but these chicks do everything together.
Above is rest time in front of fan.
