Chicken Popsicles, Anyone tried this?

great idea!! our coop is attached to the side of the house, the spare bathroom, so we open the window and pump cool air into the coop, it seems to help, will try the frozen milkjug for the banties, what about the ducks in their duckhouse at nite?? gonna try some popsicles for them all

Ok, so while I was at work, hubby forgot to give them their popsicles so I actually got to give them one tonight. I dont think they've completely figured it out yet but after... oh an hour and a half this is all that was left

I think I may try some with fruits, some with veggies and etc.

Can a chicken actually die from HEAT...... wow...... I had no idea... they have been drinking lots of water...... and hardly laying... walking around with their mouths wide open....... I did not realize all of this was due to heat....

From what I've learned, they'd rather be cool than hot, especially heavier birds. I always fill empty soda (liter) bottles with water and freeze them. I throw them in the run during the day to cool them down some. I also have a fan running in the coop on those uncomfortable days.

I just cut up all our too big squash and zucchini and put it in the fridge for cool treats for the chicks. They love squash seeds. I also put up shade cloth on the side of their run that gets the extremely hot afternoon sun. I tried a fan and it scared them. I was afraid they would have a stroke so I removed it. I also tried a small wading pool with a little water they could stand in, but they were afraid of it too. They like to stand in their drinking water.

Does the freezing of milk jugs and placing in the coop at night really help? I have four birds, not a huge coop, but wondering if it would help keep them cool on hot humid nights.

mine will actually roost on them to cool off, and the ducks like them too- so this time of year i have a freezer full of jugs, and now frozen chick treats..

what a great idea! pretty too! I freeze water in 2 liter soda containers with top cut off so I can run it under water and then get it to release...have a huge basket full of these in the freezer...used any empty containers cans...what not to freeze water for them and have a fan in the run.. it has been getting triple digits here! I completely fill the galvanized waterer with ice from containers in freezer and by filling it...and adding a little water it lasts all day...I also have a container that I put two of the empty soda ice forms in with a little water and they love to stand on top of it and also drink from it!
