Chicken possibly with fowl corzya{UPDATE} both hen an rooster culled

He's goin back to the sale I dont know if he's ever had it he's never been sick since I've had him and I took her out when I noticed she was so hopefully he never was exposed. But I dont need him without a hen, I havent seen anymore in my area like them and normally if you do its a pair or a trio. I hate to cull her now since she's better we'll I wouldnt my nieghbor would...I def dont want her to be my problem or someone elses.

If those birds have any chance of being a carrier it is irresponsible to even think about selling them to someone else. This is exactly how people have suffered the loss of entire flocks. You really should consider culling those birds and and possibly any bird they were exposed to.

This is exactly why my flock is closed and I why I hatch my own chicks.

Here's the thing... You cannot use them to breed either. My birds were born infected. I didn't introduce anything to my flock except birds that I hatched myself. So, you can't use her for breeding- the chicks will be carriers. She will get sick again and so will he.
Think about this. If you had livestock, and one of the cows had an infectious disease, would you keep it, knowing it would infect everyone else? This is not a simple cold. It is far more serious.

If he is fine, no signs of the gunk, then I think you could re-sell him. I think some animals might be exposed but not contract the illness.

Cyn is totally correct. I have read everything she gave me, and then contacted state vets in nebraska.

If it were me, I would cull them both. You have to consider your reputation as a chicken keeper as well. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but this is a significant problem

First of all, you aren't sure it is Coryza. Secondly, there is an outbreak all over, of a mutated fowl Laryngotracheitis, which mimicks the symptoms of Coryza but not exactly. The symptoms begin as clear, runny stool. The next stage is a red, wormlike dot in the runny stool, followed by a yellowish diarrhea that continues to change color until the bacteria moves into the trachea and works its way through the side of the trachea and kills the bird. By that time, there is not muscle tissue left in the body, the bird has become weak and listless and has been rumbling when it breaths. This is accompanied by some sneezing and coughing sometimes and sometimes not. Sometimes one eye becomes mattered shut and sometimes no eyes become mattered shut. Sometimes both eyes become mattered shut.

I had it in my flock and even the veteranarians and the local college lab did not figure it out until recently. I have established a treatment plan for my new chickens in the spring. Tylan and other antibiotics just prolong the end. With this particular disease, even though they seem like they are better, the first chill they get will make them sick again or most likely kill them.

The best thing to do when you are not sure is to separate the bird and start adding Oxine to the water at 7 drops per gallon. Birds transmit contagious diseases when they dip their beaks into water to drink. Oxine kills the bacteria. This only helps.

I'm pretty sure it is the corzya everwhere I've read has talked about how bad the discharge from the nasal passages stink ...believe me it stinks kinda like a dead animal. But anyhows someone said about the passing to the chicks, from what I've read all has said it didn't pass to the eggs.

As far as him. As soon as I noticed something with her I moved her an shes been seperated ever since the rooster has never shown any sign of anything and he's had to deal with some pretty rough weather since, and still no sign of anything. So I really dont think there is a problem with him and he's in a pen with just a board dividin him and another pair I've got of birchens, and they have yet to come down with anything either. They've been neighbors for over a month now. So I feel like he's fine I've even thought about keeping him and findin him a new lady but I've never seen any others around here.

I also read in different places that it was possible for them to be carriers of it but that didnt mean that they would be thats why I'm torn.

Trust me, I know this isn't easy. Every person must make their decision about whether to treat or cull; knowing what's the right thing to do doesnt make it easier to swallow. Whatever you do, I just feel neither of them should be sold/given away to anyone else. Sorry you got stuck with this problem.

If I bought sick birds from a sale that had this disease I would be so angry. If I were you I would cull them and report this to the person you bought them from and ask for your money back. It was irresponsible of them to sell them to you in the first place. Please don't sell either one of yours at the sale. It's unfortunate that this happened but sometimes you just have to cull them.

I have no clue who they came from...this sale is probably not as high tech as some of ya'll may have heard of go to...the birds are brought in boxes by how they want them sold and they are auctioned off by crate and you pay whatever the bid is by how many birds. So more or less you know when you go that your takin a risk cause you can't really inspect the chickens before they are sold. I am angry that I got stuck with these birds however I knew when I wen that there was a risk. I Also had no clue until i got to researchin how many diseases there is that they can get and how hard id is it to tell the difference to know if its a disease they will carry or completley get over. I have gotten attached to this hen since I've doctor'd her back to health everyday now for a month. And she is better except the one eye and I really think its because of her scratchin it and gettin a secondary infection in it. I also read that normaly with corzya it lasts around 2 weeks I'm goin on a month now.

Ok. IF you decide to treat. "IF" you can keep the bird separated for at least a year I can help you with the treatment some. It can take up to a year for the bird to heal completely and no longer be a carrier but then you would need to get her tested. It is possible for her to recover.
