Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

We've had so much rain over the weekend and looks like we may get some more today that we were talking of getting the Ark built....
On another note..how do you know when you're addicted to this forum? When you work 14 hours and all you can think about is "wonder what's going on on the Backyard Chicken Board".

I bought my house! The deed will be recorded tomorrow or the next day and I pick up the keys on Friday!

I can realize my addiction and not have to hide my ducklings once I get moved, and my chicken flock will no longer be illegal due to size!

Wahoo!

Hey mugs, since you have a zillion chickens, what do you do when you get a giant pile of broodies? (if you do). I have only eight mature girls in one of my coops (+ three too young to lay and a roo) and so far FIVE of them are showing broody signs. I don't have time to break them all, plus I really don't need piles of babies. Thinking of resorting to a (gasp!) hatchery and ordering a pile of pullets for three weeks from now - stick them under the hens and sell the excess when 'weaned'. But with 100+ chickens, what do you do?

I know we're all addicts here, but DH has drawn the line at 4.5 coops. LOL.

featherz: I always have someone or 2 or 3 or 4 trying to go broody. I just daily take their eggs and take them out of the nest box. It is just part of my chores. I have tried giving them eggs to sit on and they change their minds most of the time after a few days or switch nests, all kinds of crazy stuff. I have heard it is 50/50 chance on getting them to accept chicks they didn't hatch. I have had a few serious broodies that were silkies that have hatched out a batch, but I had to separate them and give them a safe place. I am over broody hens for this year and I am a mean mommy who won't let them try to have babies.

They eventually do give up and go about their lives pecking at the dirt.

It is your call if you want to let them sit or have chicks.

I let one sit, but the rest I am hauling out each time I catch them. I don't have time or room to put broodies in wire cages, ice cubes, whatever.. so they DO give up if you just keep taking them out? I take the eggs too. I can't take care of all these chickies! LOL.

I hear you on the rain! Our grass is SOOOO tall because we can't get out to mow. We haven't rototilled our garden yet...I just want to get it all done so we can sit back and enjoy our summer! I'm thankful we at least get a break in the rain this weekend...our 10 day forecast called for 10 days straight of rain...now it looks like Sunday and Monday will be sunny. Woot!!!

The pallets I brought home for projects? I think the project is gonna be an ark. My property is under water. I am SOOOO glad Featherz was so patient waiting for me to come get her girls, cuz it is really paying off raising the level of the run before building it. The poor biddies would be WADING if I hadn't.

I have my garden planted. Most of it will probably rot instead of grow, however. I do appriciate that I KNEW it was wet when he bought the place so I built raised beds for veggies the very first year. It has definately paid off. Didn't hurt that the town sells compost for 7 bucks a truck load, so I could afford to FILL the raised beds. But it can stop raining now. Really a day or two without rain would be ok. I wonder if God uses the internet ?

Silkies...seriously....you can't go wrong with silkies!!!

Thankyou Mug for responding.
Yes, Silkies are certainly on my short list, probably white ones.

I am like a kid in a candy store with all the varieties of colors shapes and sizes. That is why I have so many chickens. I like the birds that still lay nice eggs but are pretty too. I love my Speckled Sussex because they are beautiful. I do love my silkies too. I have 2 hatchery Spitzhauben girls that are really pretty and will hopefully lay pretty white eggs too. The skies the limit, just pick ones that are appealing to you and if you are like me you could have one of every kind.
