I'm down to about 35 adult chickens (I still don't count the chicks and teens)...only my silkies and bantam Black Tailed White Japanese have gone broody. I've let the Silkies sit on eggs, but they never had a chance to hatch (goose eggs included) and the BTWJ hatched out 3 of her own chicks! I have one cochin that I thought was going broody last year, but it lasted 3 or 4 days. Not one of my LF have gone broody to date.

I surely would have saved my money and not bought the big Brinsea!

This is exactly how I operate. My flock is extremely colorful and varied. LF and bantams, feather-legged, feather-footed, clean legs, green eggs, blue eggs, deep brown eggs, pink, white, light brown... "All I need now" are Buckeyes, Speckled Sussex, and some JG hens for the HUGE Roos I've hatched.

Hmmm...you made me think of a picture contest. Want to help me put on a "who has the most colorful egg basket contest"? What should I come up with for a prize? A box of mealworms perhaps?

I rushed back inside and got the brooder ready! He is such an active little guy! I looked at the rest of the eggs and another one is pipped. I am holding him in my lapright now, he's snuggled up in my shirt chirping/whistling away.

Will post a picture when I have one!

But....but.......but........I can't win until August.

My white egg layers and dark brown egg layers are only 3 months old.

Are you raising mealworms now???? I want to do that! Is it hard to get started?? Where did you get your starter worms from?? My boys would love to raise them and my birds would love me for it!

You should help me judge it! I'll send you some mealworms to get you started or order them online. Petco.com has them...I bought 5,000 last year for $30. We were buying 50 tiny ones at a time from the PetSmart store for $3.50 each carton. Petco sent a big box of them. They are so easy to take care of. Put them in a tub of wheat bran and give them a carrot or potato wedge every week or two and they are all set. I've even forgotten mine for over a month and they were doing just fine! Now for the chant..."do it, do it, do it, do it, do it!"

So you can just buy regular meal worms and start them like that?? I will have to go read the thread on it that I was checking out a few months ago. Our pet store sells them by the scoop

I could just go get a few scoops of them to start couldn't I ????
Sounds fun. Do you keep them in the house or in a shed?
