Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Hello, Hello. My name is Louieandthecrew and I'm a Chicken Addict. One year me and my family went on a trip to Costa Rica and at the place the we stayed they had 10 Rhode Island Red hens, giving them 10 eggs every day! When we came home from that vacation I decided to buy 6 day old chicks from our local Tractor Supply Co. and had a coop built and since then we have lost some and gained some, but now we have seven chickens, only one of them left from our first clutch of chicks.

Yay!
PS. I'm a female, my oldest roosters name is Louie

Welcome! Welcome! I should say I'm impressed that you and your family have maintained less than 10 chickens. Most of us bring home/hatch more and more and more! It is what we call chicken math.

My name is equinehugger3, and I'm a chickenaholic. It all started when I read a book when I was little. It was about some girl who won goose eggs and hatched them... I decided then and there that I'd hatch some type of poultry and raise them. After a couple years, for my February birthday I asked for an incubator. It took a lot of reading up and waiting, but finally spring came (my parents wouldn't let me get them in the winter =P), and I set out to look for duck eggs. I came back empty-handed, because there weren't any duck people in our area. BecauseI was so desperate to hold a fluffy little chickie, I decided I'd go with chickens. My mom's co-worker owned a chicken farm, and brought us fertile eggs. I hatched them, getting only three because of a stupid heating mistake on my part (

). I loved them, and they grew up to be big chickies. Then, one morning, on my first day of school, we heard an odd crow. We had a rooster! Me and my brothers were thrilled, but Mom and Dad weren't too happy. Eventually he was shipped away to another farm in the country. I'll never forget how he looked straight at me and crowed one last desperate time as he was driven away

. After a while, I convinced my parents to let me get two more chickens (They won't be able to keep each other warm with only two of them!). We went on to have many more adventures, like runaway chickens, and first eggs. Now I'm at four, and I love them all. except we just got like two feet of snow, and our coop is not really built for this weather. I'm thinking about building one of those awesome house-like ones this spring. I feel bad though, because by then, we would've only had it for a year! (How long is a coop supposed to last, anyway? Like the average coop-coop, not an awesome house one... just curious) Anyway, yeah. Thanks for listening to my weird story.

P.S. What does DH stand for? I know that's really really really REALLY dumb, but I'm not positive and I want to know for sure. Yepp, thanks.

There are no dumb questions. DH stands for dear husband. Don't ever be afraid to ask a question on BYC...we are all here to help (or enable) one another!

As far as your coop...it could last anywhere from a season to years and years. It all depends on how it was made, the materials involved, etc. We've made temporary run/coops, small coops, now a LARGE coop. You can always find uses for them...like separating out egg layers from breeding pairs/trios. Or keeping young ones in one, adults in another. You find what works for you, and if you need to make changes, that is part of raising chickens.

What kind of chickens do you have now?

You will not be sorry getting Buff Orpingtons! 3 of my first chicks were BO's. Out of all of my chickens (and I have LOTS)...the BO's are some of my all-time favorites! I am going to cross them to my Buff Ameraucana roo just so I can have Buff Easter Eggers. Best of both worlds for me!
