Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I figure the top part is already set as far as ventilation goes - just will add hardware cloth to that.. And it's right up against a fence, so with some added fencing a run will be easy. Adding roosts will be easy too.

But a front? that's the part I don't know about. We've built the other three coops just by cobbling stuff together - the best one was done with a shed kit and various cheap stuff. This one could be the best yet since it has real roofing and thick walls (not the plywood we used for the others). And it would actually be an improvement to the property since any upgrade to it would be a plus!

That 3-sided structure is WONDERFUL! I wish there was an unused one of those on our place, it would have a front on it and chickens in it!

The way I see it, you have several options:

1: Add a front wall with a person-door, a pop-door and windows in it, with a run in front of that. The wall would just be framed with 2x4s with sheet metal over plywood, perhaps insulated with plywood on the inside over the insulation.

2: Same as option 1, but put the wall containing the doors and windows set back a bit and then use the remainder of the overhang to cover your run and then just put hardware cloth/ wire mesh over the 4th wall with a door in it as well.

3: Similar to option 2, but the only "person-sized" door would be in the wire covering the 4th (open) wall. The person door could use one of the 2 tallest beams as a lintel that the hinges would be screwed into. Once inside the person door, you could have hutch-style coop(s) all the way around the inside, with open run area under the hutches. The run would be the entire floor of the barn and the "hutches" could be tall enough to contain roosts and nests.

I personally like option 3 the best, I would insulate the walls of the hutches, but this way it is a much smaller area to insulate and the birds body heat will easily heat the smaller area. Also, the floors of the hutches could be made of 1/2" hardware cloth, with droppings trays or hinged boards for tidiness.

What an endless myriad of possibilities! How wonderful to have such a building!

I definitely am going to do something with this thing!

Okay so here's the deal hold the string over mid back of baby chicken near abdomen area, not it's head....Thanks when you said something about the mother to be test, that reminded me of the exact location.

Oh I at my wonderful mature age learned a new word....dowsing.....cool...Grandpa was a dowser....That will be a great word for his chapter of my book.

Y'all have a good day! I'm dreaming of more coops and such and planning new populations and my trip to the poor house.....LOL...........

I don't have a problem, repeat after me, I don't have a problem........................

Heather, take a pic of your 3 sided structure. I'll see if DH can help you. I noticed something missing on your list...where are your guineas? You are so lucky to have so many structures for your birds. I have a feeling DH will be outside building me a new coop in February! Burr. I'll be sure to load him up on hot coffee...keep him warm and caffeine motivated.

Where are your OE's coming from?

But where are

The Ducks?
The Geese??
The Turkeys?????

What is it with this addiction group????? These are all poultry!!!!! They all have 2 legs and lay eggs and are so nice!!!! Ducks and Turkeys and geese imprint better than baby chicks.....Please remember them!!!!I did lol and that's why I count over 400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(and I hide a few babies under the guest bedroom bed too!!!) ......

Hello everyone!

Very... odd news. My hen seriously (with no doubt) changed sexes
th.gif
I am absolutely that she was a hen, and she is positively a rooster now! I did some research and it is actually possible, though rare, for a pullet or cock under one year (still growing) to change into one of the opposite sex

So, my BR rooster will be auctioned along with two other roosters of mine at the auction tomorrow, and that will leave me with one hen, my Cochin rooster (for show), my Wellie rooster (for breeding), and my other little rooster that can't be sold yet because he is a little bloody

But, in March I'll have 15 BO chicks, as most of you already know!

Naughty Bargain, don't tempt all the addicts on here! I want some of those SOOOOOO bad!

I have been so tempted by the Hatchery Surprise (Hatchery Choice) from Cackle Hatchery

Like Surprises?
No choice of kind or amount of birds but we guarantee a bargain.
Hatchery Choice are shipped at 1 day of age, the chicks arrive at your post office at 2-3 days of age

$43.95 plus $15.00 shipping for a total of $58.95

Apparently, most people get a decent mix of chickens with most getting as many pullets as roos AND a few Turkeys, Guineas, Ducks, Geese, etc!

I would REALLY like to tempt fate and order this! It cost less than I paid for my last order of 25 assorted pullets!

However, I like where I live and I am not sure I could rehome baby ducks, geese, guineas and turkeys successfully (or willingly), so...
