I figure the top part is already set as far as ventilation goes - just will add hardware cloth to that.. And it's right up against a fence, so with some added fencing a run will be easy. Adding roosts will be easy too.

But a front? that's the part I don't know about. We've built the other three coops just by cobbling stuff together - the best one was done with a shed kit and various cheap stuff. This one could be the best yet since it has real roofing and thick walls (not the plywood we used for the others). And it would actually be an improvement to the property since any upgrade to it would be a plus!

The way I see it, you have several options:

1: Add a front wall with a person-door, a pop-door and windows in it, with a run in front of that. The wall would just be framed with 2x4s with sheet metal over plywood, perhaps insulated with plywood on the inside over the insulation.

2: Same as option 1, but put the wall containing the doors and windows set back a bit and then use the remainder of the overhang to cover your run and then just put hardware cloth/ wire mesh over the 4th wall with a door in it as well.

3: Similar to option 2, but the only "person-sized" door would be in the wire covering the 4th (open) wall. The person door could use one of the 2 tallest beams as a lintel that the hinges would be screwed into. Once inside the person door, you could have hutch-style coop(s) all the way around the inside, with open run area under the hutches. The run would be the entire floor of the barn and the "hutches" could be tall enough to contain roosts and nests.

I personally like option 3 the best, I would insulate the walls of the hutches, but this way it is a much smaller area to insulate and the birds body heat will easily heat the smaller area. Also, the floors of the hutches could be made of 1/2" hardware cloth, with droppings trays or hinged boards for tidiness.

What an endless myriad of possibilities! How wonderful to have such a building!

What is it with this addiction group????? These are all poultry!!!!! They all have 2 legs and lay eggs and are so nice!!!! Ducks and Turkeys and geese imprint better than baby chicks.....Please remember them!!!!I did lol and that's why I count over 400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(and I hide a few babies under the guest bedroom bed too!!!) ......

Actually did think of putting the day bed on high risers and opening up that space but hubster said no..... It's okay he doesn't say no too often!

Hello everyone!

Very... odd news. My hen seriously (with no doubt) changed sexes

I am absolutely that she was a hen, and she is positively a rooster now! I did some research and it is actually possible, though rare, for a pullet or cock under one year (still growing) to change into one of the opposite sex

So, my BR rooster will be auctioned along with two other roosters of mine at the auction tomorrow, and that will leave me with one hen, my Cochin rooster (for show), my Wellie rooster (for breeding), and my other little rooster that can't be sold yet because he is a little bloody

But, in March I'll have 15 BO chicks, as most of you already know!
