It looked like a huge red lump and, with pressure, guts came pouring out

I'm actually glad it died because it wouldn't have a life if it hatched. Chickens are naturally attracted to red stuff like blood... so the poor thing would have gotten pecked to death or I'd have to cull it. I wouldn't have the heart to do that...

Sorry you had to go through this, but it will make you stronger and smarter. I had 2 hatch on Jan. 3rd and 1 of the 2 was born with what you describe as a "tumor" sticking out of his belly. I put a bandaid on it and it lived a few days, but I had to put it down when it became obvious it was in pain. I cried harder than I have for years when I buried that little chick behind the garage. Better to not have hatched, than to have hatched and died.

One of the things I am noticing as I get "better" at hatching (meaning less stupid mistakes) is that some eggs will develop no matter what is wrong with temp, humidity or the eggs themselves. The eggs will develop and then quit later if there is ANYTHING wrong.

So don't think it was necessarily something you did wrong!

I have gotten several dozen eggs to develop to day 18 or so, then nothing.

I got a new thermometer yesterday that I am quite excited about! It has a wired probe! I put the probe down by the eggs and it showed 101, while the 3 thermometers on top of the eggs showed between 99 and 100! So, I turned the wafer down 2 turns and after a few minutes, the probe showed 99.6 and ALL 3 OF THE OTHER THERMOMETERS STILL SHOWED BETWEEN 99 AND 100! STUPID JUNKY THERMOMETERS!

I am currently running a hovabator 1602 with Autoturner and...

In other news my homemade bator that was doing better showed 116 degrees this morning! I don't know what happened, but I think I am going to repurpose it to be an aquarium (it is a 1950's vintage Mahogany TV)

Which do you like better?
