I'm going to have each of you on my shoulder when I do this! Great advice. Vegetarian featherz will be there too!

Here is a question...do you all just throw the feathers out? Is there something purposeful I could use them for?

You could put the kids to making a whole LOT of dreamcatchers....
Or keep the tail feathers to make a homemade duster...a dowel, some duct tape, it could work
The downy feathers are used by fly fishermen to make flies....but not sure if it's chicken or duck feathers they use

muggs, once you cut a chicken, you can cut any other bird. the process is the same.
you're welcome

once you eat chicken meat from farm grown chicken, you wont go back to the store anymore. you will see, the texture, the taste and the consistency of the meat is so much different. especially if you buy/produce cereals for their food. using cereals, the birds don't grow as big as they do when you use concentrated food, but the quality of your food improve a lot. also, the birds will be happier and they say that happy birds/animals have better quality meat, no?

. i'm cooking every day and i'm baking every day. we don't eat the same food 2 days in a row (the closest restaurant is 60 miles away, but even when it was just 2000ft away we were not going to eat at a restaurant). i bake my own bread (and many cakes and cookies too

)because they use chemicals to produce bread here and my husband don't likes it. but i love to cook and bake, so, it is no problem for me.

Muggs this reminds me of last summer. I had 9 young roosters that I needed to get rid of. I put an ad on CL and a really nice Mexican lady who could barely speak English called me. She came over and helped me catch all the guys and while we were doing that she told me all about the great stuff she cooks for her family with the chickens and roosters she is able to buy. I really liked her. When we caught them all and she asked how much total. I just couldn't help myself and I gave them to her for free. She started crying and gave me the biggest hug ever and it felt so good to know that I was providing lots of yummy dinners for her whole family and they were so thankful for it. I kept her number and she is always who I will call when I have extra roos that need to go. It was one of those feel good moments.

daisy, your gesture was wonderful

. you made those people happy and you have them as friends, i am sure they wont forget you too soon. try to grow your chicken with cereals and provide yummy dinners to your children, they deserve it too. now,if you work so hard for your birds, why not have your family enjoying it? ask that really nice woman to cut one of the roosters for you, so you see how your hard work tastes like. (i hope you don't get mad of me because i give you advices that you never asked for, but i would like to see more people at least trying to live a healthier life, growing their own vegetables that are not genetic modified and grow their own animals using cereals, not food with hormones, and if i succeed to convince at least one, i'll be happy

you can use the small feathers from the belly to make pillow cases. the best are from ducks, tho. if you decide to use the chicken ones, just put aside the small ones and let them dry and collect them until you have enough for a pillow. if you'll grow ducks or geese, you have to get the feathers off before you submerse them in boiled water (again, the small ones, from the belly and from the back too, if they are small.) you can make some blankets filed with feathers too, but you need a bigger quantities tho. ooo, these are gorgeous, they make them in hungary, i'm in love with those blankets, they are so fluffy, so light and so warming

Seriously tho, I think if you are going to eat meat, eating well raised and humanely slaughtered animals is pretty much the only way to go. It makes you respect the life given a lot more, IMO. I wish you luck.

(we too use the head and the feet of the birds for the soups).

For those of us that are used to buying headless and feetless chicken carcasses from the store...how would one use the feet and head? I've seen chicken feet cooked in asian cuisine, but I don't know how to EAT it! I would have a very hard time stomaching the thought of a floating eyeball in my soup, but I don't want to paint myself in the corner by not at least TRYING to use all parts of the bird...at least once anyway.
