Wow you are ambitious! Maybe they are Pekins? Those are some of the most common meat ducks...and the ducklings are yellow. So are you raising them in staggered batches? 1/3 now, another 1/3 in a few months and the last 1/3 later on? I'd like to look at your freezer!

I would imagine you are raising some for other people? This will be the first year we try duck. I'm not sure I've ever had it in my lifetime, and because I haven't gotten attached, I feel this will become an easy process.

We were supposed to butcher some roos this weekend, I was sick so we cancelled. Is the whole butchering process the same with ducks and chickens? (Yes, I do feel stupid for asking that question!)

Yes, i want to grow them in 3 different batches, but also i want 3 different kind of ducks too. I was reading topics at Ducks section and i think you're right, this are Pekin ducks. In the village peoples have another 2 kind of ducks and i also want those too. This year i'll try them all and i'll decide wich one we like better. I'm not selling them, but i will give almost half to my daughter, she's a student and all the money she has are coming from the drawings she sells through the internet, so i try to help her as much as i can. We have big freezers and we try not to buy any meat at all. In the fall, our freezers are full, full, full with meat and vegetables.
Yes, the butchering process is exactly the same (don't feel stupid when you ask about something that you never did before, it is normal to not know, we say "you better feel stupid, than die stupid"). I think you will love duck meat once you find a few good recipes. and the liver it's to die for

Funny story...my husband sent me a text last night that he sent to our friend Scott. He wrote: It's like a drug! Meagan is a wealth of information! Use my wife! What kind? (This is verbatum). So I texted him back: WHAT?????

Turns out a friend of ours texted my husband a picture. A picture of 6 little chicks that were given to him and his kids! This very same friend has been what I would consider the poster child for people who NEVER want chickens!!!
big_smile.png
He texted back to my husband and said...these chicks are just so cute! We can't stop staring at them! Now we can't wait for our kids to learn some responsibility (they have no other pets/critters) and the day we can go into our own backyard and collect fresh eggs!

I want to jump through the roof with excitement!

Woot!!! This same family was ADAMANT! ADAMANT! that they would NEVER raise chickens!

Another one converted!!!

Well yesterday we went to town and when I came home my Sportsman had jumped to 110!! I almost fainted!

I rushed inside and cleaned out my 1588 HB and went ahead and put all the chicken eggs in lockdown ( they're due Tuesday ) and while I was carrying the eggs inside I noticed one already had a pip! Well after I had the HB and the Brinsea packed full of eggs I wondered what I should do w/ the peafowl eggs?
hu.gif
I just had to leave them in the incubator unplugged until the temp dropped down to 100 again! I've GOT to get me another HB!
roll.png
So today the bantam egg that had pipped hatched and there are 12 other pips...and that aren't even due for two whole days. I think the temp spike had alot to do w/ it.

Anyway, I put the 9 peafowl eggs under one of my broody BOs....I just hope she stays on the nest!

Also today while I was feeding the biddies in the front yard, Sophie, came out from under the hutch w/ a chick!
ep.gif
Well I take her some water and food and out comes another chick, and another, and another, and another........................she has 12+ chicks!
th.gif
Just what I needed...MORE chicks!

Well anyway, the chicks are super cute! I keep trying to count them....but it's inpossible when she is trying to kill me! LOL

Happy Mother's Day all!
