I have had a broody hen take over a favorite nest, in a large covered kitty litter box. Then she was joined by a second broody. Then a THIRD hen crammed her way in there with them. The first two were blue Orps, BIG girls. The third is a BO.

Anyway, the blue Orps were out yesterday evening, getting food and whatnot; the BO was alone. And a little blue chick was pushing its way under Buffy's wing!!!

So at least one egg has hatched! Gosh I hope the ladies don't smother the sweet thing!

A peep with three mamas!

I have a broody myself now. Midge has been sitting in her favorite box for about a week and a half now, growling and puffing up whenever somebody gets too close. I'm trying to convince everybody that she should be able to raise the chickens that my uncle will soon be getting.

My Queen Partridge Rock hen "Pumpkin" had a few

little'ns under her this morning. I hope more will hatch as she was sitting on over ten eggs

I love seeing broody mommas and their babies! Great pics Heather!!!

Linda, that's how my silkies were. They would sit on eggs together...lure the other hens to lay their eggs in their "web"...what was nice about them incubating their own eggs was the eggs never got cold. I still wonder what would have happened if I allowed them to hatch the eggs. Would they have shared the chicks or killed what they thought wasn't theirs???? On another note...when are you moving in to your new place?

I know. It made me physically sick reading it.

Culling (killing in this case) is an awful experience no matter...I just felt that was the furthest from humane. AND, I think the person who posted that felt they did a good thing. Hopefully he/she read all the comments that flooded in against their method!

Super glad I missed THAT posting. It would have been locked cuz of the language in my reply. GAWD, what are some people thinking? One can only hope that their pipes get plugged up and the **it runs all over the floor for them to step in....cuz they sure are on my **it list.

Oh, escrow hasn't closed yet. Grrrr. We're hoping for tomorrow so I can get the keys Saturday, otherwise it will be Monday. But I have Monday and Tuesday off. It would be better to have all four days...

I won't be moved IN for a while, gotta get fences up, coop situated, etc. But I will be getting there as soon as I possibly can.
