Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I don't know, I ordered 2 tufted Romans back in February. Hand raised, follow us all over, then started grabbing chickens by the neck. None were injured, until a couple escapee chickens thought it would be cute to go sleep over in the gooses nighttime lockup area and we didn't see them!

Two dead, one of which had her toenails chewed off! A third bird, 'Barny', the Partridge rock had her back completely plucked by the geese, but played dead and so, survived.

After that I wasn't in the mood to have geese no more...

Yuck! Our geese are loose...24/7. They hang out by the duck pen, and harrass the ducklings/bigger ducks/chickens/rooster bachelor pad/dogs/and pig...but no full on attacks. I saw my boy chase off a barn cat, that made me happy! Your geese would be 2 months older than mine...again...I'm wondering if the "meanness" comes a little later. I would be so bummed. They are like puppies right now!

Awe...Geese the ever challenge. I do have a few troublesome geese but they tend to stick to the flock for the most part. Few of the farm animals have the guts to take on the Geese bullies but luckily there's a few. My two lovely German Shepherds just look at the terrible three and they turn and run. I have one extrememly brave Rooster that won't put up with anyone ruffling the feathers of his ladies or their chicks, this would be my lovely Jersey Giant. I'm the only one allowed to pick him up and herd the flock as I hand raised him. It is amazing seeing one big black fluff screaming and flapping its wings while chasing three fully grown Drake Geese.

Hi all! Long time no talk

Muggs: My geese are still nice to me and my family, but are mean to strangers. They have bit a few legs on some of my friends. If I am there and step in and tell them to back off they totally listen to me. As far as being mean to chickens, mine have no contact with chickens but I think if they did they would be mean to them. I keep them with my bigger ducks and they get along good but sure do like to boss them around and occasionally grab them but no harm has been done so far.

I still love them, but they sure have gotten really loud and honk a lot lately!!!!

Oh and Allen's Silver Ameraucana roo is from Muggs eggs and 1 of the Wheaten Ameraucanas and the Lavender too

I had to pick and choose and pick my best from the Lavs and Wheatens to get me a couple nice little breeding groups. Allen got the extras for his fancy EE plan. I can't wait for fall so I can see some eggs from my new girls.

Muggs: My JG/isa girls are sooooo beautiful! I have 1 splash that is my favorite and 3 blues. I only ended up with 1 roo and he is a pretty laced blue, but he has to go because I have too many other roos I want to keep. The girls get to stay and they are going with the layer group.

I am so glad to see you are alive and well Chandra!!! Summer = busy, busy, busy! I can see that goes for ALL of us...especially in the colder climates as this our time to play outside! (I personally hate winter!) My geese are getting bolder and bolder with the territory they roam, but so far they have been gentle to everyone that comes and goes. Let's hope this pattern continues. I would be mortified if my geese attacked someone...not sure how to handle that situation?

Were your friends okay?

Feel like a broken record...you and Allen are so lucky to have each other nearby! AND, I love that my Ameraucana grandchicks went to another of my BYC friends. Makes me happy!
big_smile.png
(Ahem...Allen...I fully expect pics of said grandchicks and greatgrandchicks! Yes, I am that type of pushy, needy grandparent!)

These JG/Isa girls I have are so beefy and friendly. I need to take some pics of them for Wynette. Do you have a pic of your roo? We just culled the roos, but out of 14 total hatched...only 4 or 5 were roos. Not bad! (The Splash and Blue JG/Isa's are in with Blue Marans, Blue OE's and Blue Ameraucanas...I lose track of which is which when counting!) I can't wait to see if these girls lay like their momma did...big fatty baseball eggs!
big_smile.png
I hope so!

I have been wondering what you are up to...thanks for popping in!

Meagan: I will try and get some pics. Maybe tonight.

Louie: I don't know how to handle the snake issue!! I have found one snake in my coop and it was a gardner snake so I just remove it and set it free far away from the coop. I would freak out if a biting kind of snake was at my feet! I say you try the moth balls thing that the people in your other thread suggested. It might even keep insects away too. I have a mouse problem in my coop and I am trying to get them out of there. It is almost impossible because I can't use poison ( my chickens love eating mice
sickbyc.gif
) If the mice came in during daylight hours my big ole hens would kill them all, but they sneak in at night when all the birds are asleep. So sorry you are having snakes. If it were me, I would try to snake proof it some way and also use the moth balls and any other "snake away" things you can find!

Bloody hot today and tomorrow should be worse. My poor birds barely did anything today during the mid day hours. I provided a cooling mist over my runs and put one whole watermellon in each pen, split long way for extra refreshment. I also have some big feed pans I bought at an auction a while back that I fill with cold well water, which only makes them a few inches of water but the chickens LOVE them for cooling off. I wish I would of gotten a picture of "Jersey" my Black Jersey Giant rooster as once I filled up the pan in his flocks pen, he ran over and flopped in,

. He just sat in the water for what seemed like forever as his ladies bathed around him.

Awww...I imagine covering myself with a down comforter in extreme heat and that's how my chickens feel!

Sorry it is so hot where you are. Yesterday was in the 60's here and today low 70's. It has been REALLY nice. Around our house, we have minimal shade...all the trees we planted are only 3 to 8 ft tall...not enough to shade squat for us, so we have to cover our runs for our birds. They don't move a muscle when it is above 80 degrees.

I like that you gave your birds a "pool" to play in and the watermelon must have hit the spot!

We all have to be very careful to protect our critters during the summer heat.

80 degrees, those chickens are pampered. It does get hot and humid in Iowa in the summer but not usually so hot in June. We have a few large shade trees near the house but my addition of coops are in the sun with only morning shade. The Geese enjoyed the pond as usual, along with the dogs and even the cat walked in the shallows. I chose to work in the house, lol. There's usually something to do and paper work is one,
