Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I have one of each too...breasts, thighs and drumsticks if they don't start breeding my hens so I can hatch eggs this winter. I thought all roosters knew what to do. These guys are DUMB or totally intimidated by the girls.

That's hilarious! I have a woman that picks up all of my extra cockerels and roos. She is willing to grow them out to eat for herself, and it frees up room here in our limited back yard. We've had a few dummies like yours...I'm not sure which is worse...the girls that take FOREVER to start laying (ahem, Ameraucanas!) or the boys that don't realize they have a job to do?

Alright everyone. Completely off topic...DH and I are stumped for names for our newest goat. We are holding a contest on our facebook page (see sig line) that ends on Christmas Eve. We'd love to have our chicken friends put their creative suggestions out there. The person with the most likes gets to name the goat! Can you help us out?

We are hoping she is pregnant, so we can run the contest again in the spring!

Ok sooo here's how i got into chickens:

We were going to buy 6-8 hens for egg laying and pets. So we got 8 pullets, one started to lay 2 days after we got her....oh the joy of your first egg! Now that was last October.

March: we got 6 adorable little chicks!!!! I fell in love one of them named, Nugget, a black australorp. And then i hatched a few turkeys in the Spring, and then in June i ordered 15 Blue laced red wyandottes. They were soooo beautiful! I fell in love with the breed and i really liked them, so i decided i was going to breed them. And after a while i made a goal to improve the breed! I began showing my chickens....and now that is a hobby for me! I sold a few hens to make room for more. And soo i was given 3 ringneck pheasants(though 1 got loose yesterday

)! And I own 2 silkies now. Sooo in the beginning of my project i had 8, then 14, then 20, then 35, and now i'm down to 24 chickens and 3 pheasants. I have 9 blue laced red wyandottes and a bunch of laying hens. I have plans to expand my pens.......in case i get into another breed

Our turkeys were released in the wild(they were eastern wilds). I know i want to get into quail sometime! I liked my turkeys and i'd love to have a few to keep in my 'poultry-yard'. I love my pheasants they are soooo beautiful!!! Next spring i'm gonna hatch some eggs from my pheasants.....and i can't wait to raise some more of them! I'd have to say my favorite breeds i raise are, black austs, blrw, silkies, and of course the pheasants!

I have a confession to make. My younger sister came down to visit and take me and my hubby and my dd up to my moms to visit in Oct. She seen my 3 hens and my ducks and said they were ugly. When we got to my moms (She lived in a 2 bedroom apartment at the time) my mom told me she didnt ever want chickens because they were dirty. Well she has since moved to a house with a fenced in backyard and now she calls me the other day and says Daughter where can i get some hens this spring? I said mom you dont want chickens remember? and she tells me... Well I have been looking at pictures of yours and they are so beautiful now I want some. So i told her about BYC and all my chicken friends on here and gave her the link to here and to a hatchery near where she live and told her that Im getting some GLCB's in the spring. She looked at some pictures of them and now shes getting 2! and shes getting 2 EEgers. lol And two other kids as well. Which will be a total of six. So I explained to her about chicken math. She loves it and seems to think it will work if she needs to get more. And my little sister whom I mentioned earlier is going to try an raise one for her self as well. along with my neice who wants to start showing some GLCB's at the fair next year. LOL Oh how the chicken addiction spreads! Its all my fault and I just thought I should confess rofl

Mugs keeps not listening to me. She needs an EMU! If I had the bator space I'd hatch one for you.

As for gateway? not so much for me. I tried guineas - loved em but too noisy.. Ducks I already knew are not for me (too messy).. Not really interested in turkeys - I don't think they lay all that well and I don't eat meat, so that's out.. A guy near me has a huge field of geese - that might be interesting..

but an emu? hmmmm..

I love when that happens! There is something to be said when people turn their noses up at raising chickens...they just don't get it! Chickens can be an absolute joy. Yes they take work and planning, but to watch their antics in the backyard is some of the best time spent. I'm glad your mom is willing to give chickens a try!

Go for the geese! What else is there? Partridge? Pheasants? Quail? Doves? Pigeons? Silkies...the alien chicken?

If I had the land you do, I would consider an emu or two. Here, some stranger would wander onto my property thinking it is a free petting zoo, and find themselves gutted by an emu. Just my luck! Along with turkeys (Lavender Turkeys...oh so pretty!), emus are on my short list! Someday!
