I live in Fort Worth, and I was wondering of any good places to go and buy chickens. I am aware Marshall Grain sells chicks for around four dollars, any where else?

What breed should I get it I have a little more than 1/2 an acre of land?

What breed lays less eggs than most?

Thanks for the help!

The breed that would be right for you will depend on several factors - intended use (meat, egg or purely ornamental), desired egg production, if you are looking for something that is more of a "pet" in personality or not, how they will be kept, etc.

Since you ask what breeds produce fewer eggs is that a desired trait for birds you would purchase - are you looking for low egg production?

You might want to do some chatting in your states thread and talk to others in your area to see where they get their birds...

Most feed stores carry chicks this time of year as do many hatcheries like My Pet Chicken, Murray McMurray, Ideal Poultry, etc...

You might also do some reading in our learning center for lots of tips and hints on keeping chickens...

Good luck in your new adventures and welcome to BYC!

If you really aren't interested in good layers, maybe you would like silkies. Are you thinking of having chickens more as a yard decoration or pets - than for meat or eggs?

I recommend Orpingtons. They are non-flighty mine rarely get higher than 2 ft. off the ground. LOL. Beautiful birds that are easily handled and a joy to watch scratching around the yard
