Goldenluver - I found those patterns - here is the link http://www.florinejohnsondesigns.com/patterns.html I especially like Roger. When all is said and done, I'll have to order those. Is the advanced way more difficult or just more pieces? I also like Hilda and her chicks!

it's both, the pictures shown is the advanced version, in the easier version the made some of the multiple parts one piece.
I was looking closer at them and I don't think I can shrink them down. the will be 11x18 finished size

I love those patterns! I have thought of buying them several times. It says the one that you are looking at finishes approximately 18 x 23. Another options would be to make your background bigger so it ends up 24 1/2 x 24 1/2 and use it as a center medallion with the swap blocks around it.

OK clever quilters...

it there a rule of thumb when you are choosing thread to go around an applique? I have some bright chickens and can't decide what to do...

Any words of wisdom??

I use whatever color that is within reach. Some of mine have red, some green, the latest ones have a real prett blue! I have a quilting book called willow winds or willow wood and they teach you to make the stitiching part of your applique. Don't use a color to bend in. Use one that jumps out!

I'm doing a color match, but i'm hand sewing them, so i'm using a dmc thread that's close (they've been ironed on, the thread is to pretty up the edges).

Well with all of your input the bad news is I still don't know what to do, but the good news is it should be fine no matter what I choose!!
Thanks all!
