Will water be able to flow into and/or puddle in the run?
Ditto the coarse wood chippings, and other dry organic materials.
I live in the PNW and hear straw is reeeeally bad if it'll get wet. Definitely going with the wood chip/shaving option, thank you!
Don't bother with shavings, they just get waterlogged when wet. Wood chips for sure as the base, and you can add in other organic matter as you get it, such as dried leaves, short dried grass, weeds, etc.
