Safe Vegetable & Pasta Soup Recipe
This recipe uses ingredients that are generally safe for chickens and palatable for humans, allowing you to share the meal.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups water or low-sodium vegetable/chicken broth
- 1 cup diced carrots
- 1 cup diced celery
- 1/2 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
- 1/2 cup cooked rice or pasta (optional, for energy)
- 1 cup chopped spinach or kale (optional, for extra nutrients)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil (for healthy fats)
- Prep: Chop all vegetables into small, bite-sized pieces so they are easy for the chickens to eat.
- Sauté: Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the carrots and celery and sauté for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Simmer: Add the broth/water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the vegetables are very tender.
- Add Ingredients: If using pasta, rice, or leafy greens, add them now and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Cool: Crucial Step: Let the soup cool completely to room temperature before serving to your chickens.
Important Tips & Safety
- NEVER add: Raw potato skins, garlic, onions, avocado skins/pits, or excessive salt.
- Texture: Ensure all vegetables are soft enough to be mashed easily.
- Serving: This soup can be served warm or at room temperature. It can also be mixed into their regular chicken feed to add hydration.
- Moderation: This is a treat, not a complete diet. It should not replace their regular formulated feed.
Safe Ingredients to Add/Substitute
- Root Veggies: Sweet potatoes (cooked), turnips, beets.
- Leafy Greens: Romaine lettuce, swiss chard, dandelions.
- Grains: Oatmeal, cooked lentils.
- Extras: A small amount of crushed eggshells for calcium.
