Here's my layman's intrepetation, if anyone wants to hear?

rooster calling hens or hen calling chicks to food: ba BICKBICKBICK

Hen telling chicks to come: low urgent cluck, cluck, cluck

Upon hearing strange noise EEEEEeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrr by roosters and hens both

Warning call: aaaawwwwwwwwkkkkkkkkkkk

Happy hen: Beeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrbbbbbbbbbbb

Lonely or lost hen: Babaaaawwwk, bawwwwwwk,

Alerting call by lead roo as in: here comes the food bringer: babok bok bok bok

Noise a defeated rooster makes when scared of another superior on the pecking order rooster:wavering plaintive high pitched soft bawwwwk, bawwwk, bawwwwwwwk

Terror or upset: cackling, baBAWK, baBAWK

My 3 year old hen has been making a plaintive soft high pitched wavering noise for a few weeks. It is a noise I have not heard before, except it is like the sound of someone drilling a hole in the othe side of a wall with a small electric drill. It goes on for quite a long time, long enough to get me out of breath when I try to copy it, and even ends with the sound you get when the drill jams in the hole. It is almost as if she is copying the drilling sound.
I found out the othe day that birds have two sets of vocal cords. One for each lung! fascinating! They can sing two notes at the same time.

I'm bumping this old thread because I was looking for a dictionary or on-line translation tool of Chickenese. Mine are talking all the time, and I'm not sure what they're saying. They might be complaining, or whining, or begging for more food, or telling me how excited they are to see me, or thanking me for bringing them treats, or yelling at me for not bringing enough treats- I can't tell.

How loud is a hen's egg-laying noises? I am particularly interested in how far the sound travels. Ideally not quote to my neighbors house, about 100' away

thanks...I am going to try and record my gals and I will post it ..i have noticed that my RIR makes a diferent sound then the other gals but she is cranky all the time she is a biter she walked up to me the other day and just bit me for no reason I was sitting in my chair reading as the kids were in the pool

She's not mean, she's hungry and telling you to put food there!

I searched this post because one of my young pullets was singing/ cooing today. It was a soft, cooo-ooo that goes up in pitch at the end as the opposite of a dove coo. I sing-answered her several times (soprano, so I can do it on pitch). She got very friendly, right up next to me, and we had quite a conversation though I have no idea about what! It seems to be a happy-sound that I have not heard the other pullets making. Any ideas?
