Chicken speak

Interesting article. But the author didn't research deeply enough or they would have discovered that all birds have syntax, the ability to string notes together in different sequences with emphasis on certain notes in the sequence to produce different meaning, as we humans do with sentences with different words to convey different meaning. https://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2...syntax-Do-bird-calls-work-like-human-language

My chickens can tell me when a friend is approaching from her house on the mountain behind mine, as well as a different sequence of notes that will let me know a bear is coming. Baby chicks are hatched already knowing this language and being able to speak it perfectly, even though their "words" are merely peeps.

If you spend enough time with your chickens, listening very carefully, you may be able to learn to understand far more than simply when they are feeling grumpy from not enough sleep.

Well, yes....." the studies published so far are small and preliminary"

..and then this is the way we do it in our coops....
"“Some farmers tell me that despite all the gadgets, their most important piece of technology is a five-gallon bucket,” Berry says. “They turn it over and sit on it, and watch the birds for hours.....” "

Mine have learned my calls! I came up with my own sounds/words to call them and even warn them when I see a threat such as an eagle or hawk circling above.

I have a sound I use to calm them and initiate contact or chatter with them. It's eerie how they respond to my demeanor and "chicken chatter" because it's not even close to the language they use among themselves.

It's just like any other pet such as a dog learning human words. They also respond to the volume and tone used.

It's good to know I don't need to learn their language to get them to respond!

I talk to my chickens in my native language(human) and in their language(I can even make that low growling sound)
Just never talk Rooster....Lol...My Son did and my Huge Brahma charged the fence at him and all the Hens ran into the Coop...:gig...My Son is 27....

Yep, my computer is close to the back door, with the coop/run about 50' away. I can be sitting in my house, and hear the warning of chickens, jays or crows, the screech of a hawk, the distress of a Robin, and know that I need to go out to intervene. Hubby will be sharing the same space, and be totally oblivious to it. I also have a distress call I use when a hawk is circling and I want my flock to return to the run. Most of them respond appropriately. There is a peace that comes from being in my yard, and communicating with the animals who live in my space.
