Hi there
A few months ago my brown Pekin bantam chicken started making different noises to her usual sounds. Her usual sounds seem to be more high-pitched than usual, almost like she’s whistling/screaming/squeaking. There has been no chan in behaviour, she’s still as lovely as usual and eating and drinking normally. Checked crop that seems to be ok and tried to check inside her mouth but she won’t let me! She seems to be breathing like normal but if you get close up to her It does sound as if she has something blocking her airways (like you sound when you have a cold). Also felt her breast area just above her crop and below her beak (neck) which feels very hard, almost like she’s sticking her neck outwards. Not sure whether that’s to do with her head position or whether it’s normal just thought it was worth a mention. The hard feeing runs all the way down from just below her head to the top of her crop.
Just wondering if anyone knows what this could be/ any help would be appreciated thank you!

It may be something just particular to that chicken or could be structural. I have one hen who makes funny noises from honking when she breathes, along with several other noises like the ones yours does. She is a big healthy older hen and runs all over our yard daily with her rooster.

We didn’t think much of it at first but since she hasn’t ever made the noises she used to. We’re more concerned about the possible wheezing and lump that seems to be in her throat. But thank you for the reply :)

The hard thing you are feeling could be her tracheal cartilage, if it feels like a hose. But there can be growths or infection that can affect the throat and crop, such as canker which can be seen inside the beak and can extend down into the crop. Usually sick birds appears weak and are not eating though. Hopefully, it is nothing.

I thought it might be that, seemed to be a long hard bone-like structure. Didn’t press too hard obviously! And yeah hopefully it is nothing, we bought some wormer today just in case but as long as she’s well and still her usual self hopefully she’ll be fine. Many thanks for the reply :)
