Chicken struggling to breathe

I went out this morning to let my chickens out, and one is just sitting, opening her beak as if she's struggling to breathe. It reminds me of someone with asthma. It's too early here for the vet to be open, is there someone who knows what is wrong, and what I can do?

She could be choking. Check its throat for anything!
It could have a respiratory infection. Get it somewhere moist or steamy so it can breath better until you can give it antibiotics.
It could fowl pox, which can lead to trouble breathing.
It could be over-heating. How warm is it there?

I hope she gets better soon!

. Thank you for your prompt reply, sadly my little Ancona hen has died. She hadn't been sick because she was in really good condition so this happened very quick over night. We are in the middle of winter here so it wasn't over-heating, but now we'll never know, my husband just buried her and the grand kids are going to make a cross. Thanks again, Helen

Be extra careful to check for any kind of illness. If another chicken starts acting the same way you'll know it wasn't just a freak accident, and then you'll want to figure out exactly what's going on very quickly.
I hope for the flock's sake that it was a freak choking accident or something of the sort.
Sorry about your loss.

I'm really sorry.

Keep an eye on the others, to make sure that it is not contagious.

I've been out with the flock all morning, and so far, fingers crossed, they are all running around, scratching happily, eating happily, with no signs of illness. I'll continue to monitor them though just in case, I don't want to lose any more - they're my babies.
